Graphics issues with ATI

I recently installed AC onto my laptop which is a Dell Latitude 500 CPx. It has an ATI Rage Mobility M-1 video card.

It's giving me the following errors:

FATAL ERROR: Could not initialize Direct3D Device!

FATAL ERROR: Cannot initialize the render engine!


I'm running Windows XP SP1, going to install SP2 in a bit here to see if it helps. I try running the game without 3d acceleration and it just gives me the "Client has caused an unexpected error and will not shut down" message. Any clues? No third party utilities are currently running.

Installing Windows 98 SE right now. Need to get the updates and download AC. I'll post any progress, any suggestions?

I have been getting the same error on my computer occasionally recently while running AC. I also have an ATI graphics card. My computer however is a Dell Dimension Desktop 8300 series(ATI radeon 9800 pro is the card type)

I have been running third party apps and I assumed it was a problem there, but since Darkfenix says he wasn't running third party apps, now I am not so sure.

any recommendation as to what we should do?

off start bar click run type Dxdiag

DirectX Diagnostic will come up click on display tab


You will see a bunch of info half way down you will see DirectDraw and Direct3D there are test buttons. I say run the tests and see what happens you have to uninstall DirectX and reinstall

I know with the DirectX9.0 b I had an issue I had to downgrade it and it seemed to fix it
