New Maximum Level
The maximum level is being raised to 275!!

Yay. I am lvl 110-something. If I REALLY push it, I might make 126 before the expansion. Only problem is, to do that, I would have to kill more mobs than I'd like and I would prolly get brurned out in the process. Killing endless mobs is not fun.

Augmentation Gems
After reaching 126 you can opt to get Augmentation Gems. No word on whether these are crafted, looted, quested, etc.

However once you have one you can activate it by spending xp and it will give various affects, some mentioned:
- drop less items on death
- another pack space

This is kind of interesting. Only problem is that since you have to spend XP on it, you would still have to kill endless hoards of mobs. And that's still no fun.

New PC Race

I could care less. Guess it's nice if you want to reroll, or if your are new to the game. If I want one, I would have to kill endless mobs to get the new char to my level. Not fun.

Graphics Update
The graphics update will move from 16-bit to 32-bit texture buffers and move from DirectX 7 to DirectX 9.

If I cared about graphics, I wouldn't play AC.

New Critters

We get new critters practically every month. What's new?

No Elder Game Land Control
Due to the lukewarm reaction to the land control aspect initially announced, it was shelved.

It will be developed after the expansion pack as a downloaded 'booster' that will be automatically given to everyone with the expansion pack. Slated to be done Fall 2005.

So... Nothing to do but slaughter endless mobs and doing a few quests (maybe 2 a month?) until Fall 2005? No thanks.

I think the "lukewarm" reaction was because ppl didn't know how you would implement it and doubted that you would be able to make it fun, challanging, balanced and worthwhile.

Rare Drops

Interesting. But I guess the "common" rares will be useless and the "good" rares will be impossible to find.

What disturbs me the most is that the only things I find interesting is not expansion-pack material, but should be added in monthly patches. And the things we really could use, like diversified gameplay (something other than killing endless mobs) and meaningful eldergame is left out.

What this game needs (IMO) is more quests. Quests that do things different. Quests that does not include the slaughtering of endless mobs. Some quests that I really like is the Garlean quest and Elysas favour. Those are nice.

It also needs to reward something else than endless slaughtering of mobs. This could tie in with the Augmentation gems.

What if instead of spending XP on them, you spend some sort of "credit". These credits could be gained in several ways.
1. Turning in questitems to a npc. This would encourage ppl to do more quests, and doing quests would have a meaning even if the usual reward was useless.
2. Killing different kinds of mobs. Each time you kill a new kind of mob you would get a credit. This would move ppl out of dungeons and make them explore more.
3. Explorer-credits. When I was new to the game, I used to travel to the different landmarks marked on the map, just to see what's there. How aobut shrines placed at various places on the landscape, or at the bottom of dungeons, which grants credits when used? Instead of ppl running past dungeons with the comment "xp sucks in there", they would think "cool, a dungeon I havn't been in, let's explore it".

I posted more ideas about quests in this thread:

The only thing that sounds of interest in the pack is the new race, is it possible there is something totally different in this new race?

However.... nothing in that pack would induce me to buy it. Far from it.... the pack would make me leave AC. The level cap of 275 will finally retire my AC accounts. Turbine has envoys to ban UCM's but encourages everyone to go for those extreme levels... the only way to do that is to UCM.... sounds like mixed messages to me.

Will we see an increase in our XP over time?
Answer: Yes.

So it's going to become easier to attain these levels. As for the Viamont, my understanding is basicly everything about them is unique.

The Viamont:

Will the creatures in the new landmass attack Viamontians?
Answer: Yes, they will attack all players, but not Viamontian NPCs. There will be some simulated faction conflict.

What are the Viamontian styles of weapons?
Answer: The Viamontians will have their own suite of weapons (special swords, spears, etc.) New models are being worked on.

What are the Viamontian starter skills?
Answer: We’ve determined what they will be, but we’re not telling you!

Will the Viamontian armor be restricted to characters of that heritage?
Answer: No, it will work much like the existing heritage armor. It will also be tinkerable.

The Aluvian, Gharu’ndim, and Sho races all had real-world influences. What was the influence for the Viamont?
Answer: Medieval French and Italian cultures influenced the Viamont. Think of them as Medici’s on steroids!

Actually, I really like your idea of using "credits" for the augmentation gems instead of XP. To me, that makes more sense and would provide a nice break from the nonstop olthoi/tusker/biaka slaughter that is AC at the moment.

I know I can barely force myself to fight enough to level up once, and I'm only 113. Nevermind when I'm 150, or 200.

I agree!

It is sad that I was looking forward to this expansion. It now looks like this will be the reason I look for a different MMORPG after 3.5 years.

Hmmm you might be on to something there...

Would take a bit of dev time, but for all us explorers... add an explorer skill thing under chess rank and fishing skill...

Add 'markers' at every POI, every town, various non POI landmarks, alot of the dungeons... every festival stone whatever... add tons of markers... they could look like mini bind stones or something. (or if Scenario is feeling frisky, he could make the markers fit in with the surroundings, like a torch in a dungeon for a marker... or a rock at a wildnerness poi... a floor plate at a structure... somethign you wouldnt notice unless you were looking for it etc)

Anyway... you click on the marker you get 1 point into your Explorer skill... can only click a marker once per character ever.

Give explorers something to brag about...

Take it one step farther, get 100 explorer points, talk to Explorer society person they give you a token for new title, like Master Explorer.... 500 points,... Expert Explorer etc...

Even farther... 1000 points you get a new title and a housing item of some kind, like a mini astrology thing from the observatories...

Every month new markers could get added... in the new dungeons or new ones on the landscape that people could find...

MMmm loving the whole concept... exploring love...

Even more... to get more complicated... could add special "quest" markers... that when you click em it says "you need to complete a quest to intereact with this marker"... for example... then you have to actually go do the whatever, Cragstones armor quest... go back click it, bang get another explorer point... Wandering Bowyer marker... have to find an talk to a wandering bowyer, then click the marker... bang explorer point...

Yeah this could go on forever...

Wonder who we have to bribe to get this on the to-do list...

Unique? From what I've read, they will be exactly like the "races" we have now, but with prettier graphics.

They have their own starter-skills.
They have a racial armor.
They have their own kinds of weapons.

The above can be said for any race. If there isn't anything they havn't released about them yet, they will not be very unique.

I think turbine should really take a step back and think about what they want AC to be all about.

If you want AC to be a huge level-grind, where the only important thing is how much xp you have, sure go ahead and do it your way.
If you want AC to have something else to it than grinding xp, I think you should pay attention to some of the really good ideas that have been posted on these and other boards. Try to think in other terms than just XP and Levels. Please.

You have to kill lots of mobs to level and use the gems yes like every other RPG and MMORPG out there if you dont like to do it then why are you playing the game? PArt of the game is hunting a lot to rech level goals to unlock more content you cant see at lower levels.

And this f#$%^$ 360sec timer is really starting to get to me why the hell is it at 360sec? i think 60sec is long enough god wth.

If killing endless hordes (not "hoards") of mobs is not fun for you, why don't you play Sims Online instead?

Exploration is its own reward; if they wanted to reward it with xp they could simply raise the Run skill based on usage.

Fiction_LC >> Yes, killing lots of mobs is a part of the game, however, I think it's a too large part of AC. In general, there is too little "RPG" on the MMORPG market. And exactly what kind of content is it that you want to unlock? Quests and questitems? Or is it new dungeons where there are mobs which yield slightly higher xp/h? I mean, once you have done a quest, there often isn't much reason to do it again. I don't think it's that fun to sit in a dungeon for days to gain a level. And then when I've gained that level, I do a quest which takes maybe one or max two hours. After that it's straight back to the dungeon for a few days, or even weeks, just to be able to get to the next one or two hour quest.

Asper >> If you like killing endless hordes (thanks for correcting that, english is not my native language) that much, why don't you just play quake or instead? Now that I think of it... The mobs in quake are actually more fun to kill than the mobs in ac :P In most modern games mobs run and hide and use tactics against you... AC could use mobs like that (with much increased XP rewards).
If they rewarded running with xp, we would get "Unattended Running Macros" :D

On another note, the latest patch seems interesting... Looks like some fun stuff in there and a bunch of quests :) Thumbs up for that!

I agree with poster. Alot of the stuff added to the expansion are things that should be put into patches with the exception of the new race. We get new creatures, new items, new dungeons and quests almost every month. Right now there is nothing that would intice me to buy the expansion. My monarchy was looking forward to the elder game land control which was hinted at being added. IMO the graphics aren't that much better to buy the expansion.
I do like the credit idea that was suggested instead of using xp. That way the benefits would be open to all instead of us that are 126+.
