I am confused as to the pricing of the pre-order box. The announcement on the web site indicated that the retail version would go on sale 5/11 for $29.99 and the the pre-order box would go on sale 4/11. Specifically the web site FAQ says the following:

"Q: When will the Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny pre-order box be available for retail purchase?

A: By 4/11/2005. Some retailers will likely stock it earlier, but we do not have control over that process and can't tell you when exactly they'll have it on shelf. We will update you when we know more.

Q: What will the retail price of the pre-order box be?

A: That is determined by the retailer, but will probably be between $9.99 and $12.99"

Anyone have any insight into this???

Generally, if you pre-order ToD, you'll be able to pick up the pre-order box free of charge.

Clarification:

The full price of the game in the US and Canada is $29.99.

Some retailers may charge you a deposit for the Pre-Order ($5.00, $9.99, $12.99 whatever they set it at). This will then be taken off the full purchase price when you pick it up.

The confusion lies within the wording.

Pre-Order from the retailer point of view means you commit to purchasing the product when they get it in stock. This is a way to ensure they do not over-order and get stuck with a bunch of extra copies they may not be able to sell. It is essentially a deposit.

Pre-Order from Turbine perspective is a Pre-Release, meaning that you are ordering a unique product (with bonuses) in advance of the release of a different product (no bonuses).

Here comes the confusing part ...

Some retailers have received the Pre-Order box which they physically have in the store to sell to you. This box is in itself the Pre-Order (with bonuses) from Turbine. Everything you need to play AC:ToD is in that box. You do not have to order or pay for anything else (except the monthly subscription).

To sum things up ... you should not be paying more than $29.99 (suggested retail) for the AC:ToD expansion pack in it's entirety.

Hope that helps clear thijngs up :)

Not true. You do not get a CD with the pre-order box.

I went into a Gamestop store and asked if they had the preorder box, they said yes. I asked now what? They said it would cost 5 dollars to reserve the ToD game. I gave them dollars and they gave me an instore credit of 5 dollars and listed me for the TOD expansion. Then they gave me a preorder box. So the 5 dollars goes toward the expansion and you get the preorder box free.

In the box is a DVD with a trailer for the expansion. On the paper sleeve of that DVD is a code you enter in the "manage your account" section. You'll see a link that says preorder Tod. You enter your code and you are set to get the gems once you receive the ToD disk and install it.

I stand corrected.

I thought the box had the CD in it but you would not be able to access the new upgrades etc until the release date.

Nonetheless, you should not have to pay anything in addition to the $29.99.
