I have been playin sence '99 and still no transportation ...
i think that when the expansion comes out you could use your experiance or mmd's to buy horses ( they would be very expensive)
you could have a starter horse/mule with 150 base run...
and you raise it's run/quick/strength with your spair experience.. and the higher that is the horse would be a stalion and what not and it's run could max out at 500 costing like 10 mill xp... and you could give him health / stamina potions when he gets tired.. and you could add a loche in cottages/villas/mansions..
at the mansions there could be about 50 loches in the basement mayby and you could let him rest there in the dung or somethin.. just thought that would be cool.. also thought invisibility cloaks would be cool.. and wings ;p

We can already get run of 500, depending on buffs, level, and starting stats and I can get to almost naywhere in the game within a reasonable time.
I do think AC2 mounts kinda sucked; they couldn't fight with you, you couldn't give them armor or dress them up in anyway, they didn't have any upgradeable stats, they couldn't hold anything for a quick storage spot when you packs got full, and worse of all they didn't last forever or even have a worth while lifespan.
O ya they couldn't fly, play musical instruments, dance, emote, mate, macro, do quest do me or even get me one stinkin' drink of water either 8-)

Edit: They are not eye candy in the other 2 games I play that have them. In fact they are quite handy to have to help me fight or get me around faster. When done right they are NOT eye candy at all.

Players already run extremely fast, and the hundreds upon hundreds of portals make travel very easy. Other MMOs usually need mounts since the characters are so slow that you would fall alseep running from Rithwic to Eastham.
To make any sort of logical impact mounts would have to give a speed boost. Combined with our already quick speed players would become blurs, not to mention that there could be server issues with letting players move from landblock to landlock at such a fast speed.
Besides, I believe emulators found that the absolute max run skill a player can have is somewhere around 480, which is currently attainable already. 5 billion or 480, there is no difference,

Close, 498 would be max to be precise, and that is base with a starting skill of 100. Cost to the player would be 4,019,438,644 for quickness and 4,203,819,496 to run, for a total of 8,223,258,140xp
With buffs and a major a person can get close to 600run, wow thats fast. Could you imagine a mount with 750-1000run. Heck I'm happy with buffin' up to 430-450.
Mounts that could be leveled and tweaked like toons, hmmm. It'd be like dual logging but with a single GUI, sounds like twice the fun. If anyone knows of an online RPG game like that let me know.... please.

Um.. you're forgetting the 8 skill points that you would have to spend to train Horsemanship and the 8 more to spec. Attributes would be... Endurance and Coordination.
The mounts would be wield required with Mule at 250 to Winged Stallion at 350. "Hold still Mr Ed while Emeril tries to turn you purple. Don't you want to match my boots?" "Skill check is 86%.. hmmm.. go ahead" "Man now I've got a gimp Pink horse an he's down 50AL"
Of course it would be cool to pimp out your ride for those occasional field charges. "Shadowfax does 97 points of bludgeon damage" -good thing I bludgeon-rendered his faceplate.

Using your knowlesge of Horse Salvaging you extract 6 units of Glue from the Pimp Gimp Horse, the object is destroyed.
Ouch!!
If we ever had mounts in AC1, it'd be 4 xpacks from now and by then the level cap would be 512, and the 4 or 5 players left would be very happy to get them.
J/K AC1 will live forever.

No transportation?!
The main reason Turbine wouldn't devote a lot of time into working on mounts is that there are other forms of transportation in-game. Portals being the main source.

Mounts wouldnt be worth it in AC, but maybe having a creature taming skill or something so you could have like a Shreth fight along side you and level it up so it has a higher attack etc would be a cool addition. You go out in the woods use the Tame Creature ability and you have a % of chance to tame a creature depending on its agression, level and your skill level. And if it dies you can heal it and it comes back to life or something. Then you would have commands you get to make the creature do an attack like if its a white wasp you get a list of the spells/attacks it has as you level it up and ads to the ID in your inventory like Flame 3 or Melee attack.
/whitewasp(or what you name your creature)_flamebolt3 or something or
/(name of creature)_melee attack.
