Is the drop rate higher than usual @ preview? Else you won't get a lot of feedback... seeing how rare they are

Found rare #51 Some jewel that gives 15 minutes of lightning protection 99.99% or something like that.
Problem is rares POOF on death, and I died shortly after I found it.
At least I found it on a level 4 or 5 drudge so didnt have to spend alot of time killing to get it.

I found a gem as well, but it did not destroy on death. In fact they make great DIs.
I also wonder if the current drop rate is the same as what we'll see when ToD is live. All the rares I've seen dropped have been gems, none of the other cool stuff.

Rares are not a good death item , they simply always drop on death.
That is on top of your normal item drop on death.

Indeed, rare items always drop on death, but they do not count towards your number of dropped death items.
The drop rate of rare items in this Preview is the same as it will be when ToD launches. So far I have seen reports of Tier 1 and Tier 2 rares that have been found, but no rares from Tiers 3 through 7. So there are many rares left to be found.

For the last day of preview one of you should log in and spawn rares for people. :p

Tier 2?
Ive only seen people post tier 1 so far. The gems.
Unless certain gems are considered tier 2.
I spent a fair amount of time hunting in this preview, but no rares. Never was lucky when it came to loot.

What kind of feedback do you guys expect to get on a system designed to put out one item, across all servers, once every 3, 6, or 12 months, when your Open Preview is only open for a month, maybe a month and a half!?
I wouldn't think people playing on the Preview World will be looting to the extent as those on existing servers would be either.
I just don't see the reasoning for this kind of feedback.
You guys at Turbine crack me up sometimes : )

Yeah, it would have been a good idea to up the drop rate on rares for the preview, personally, I never found any.
Quick question though- do rares only drop from creatures, or can you find them in chests as well?
Just an idea for encouraging exploration, but how about having a higher chance of finding a rare in dungeon chests?
Also, any chance of having a possibility of getting a rare at the casinos?

I found a gem that gave a huge bonus to a skill for a tiny period of time. Generally, I thought it was worthless unless they are going to appear relatively frequently. If they are truly rare, then such a short time period made me not care about the item.
Personally, I'm not seeing anything about rares that makes me care about them. They have been made TOO rare for the short term benefit they provide.
Also, if something spawns once in six months, and appears on another server - then it's really no use having that item in the system for me, is there?
I feel like it's a waste of time, energy and money poured into the system.

Is it possible that individuals could name their very rare (Tier 4+) weapons and armor? Maybe we could add a little backstory to it, too.
Inscriptions don't give much room for character-lore development, and we don't have anywhere else to display our in-game bios. Besides, everyone (even trade bots!) will be gawking at our rares - what better way for some (possibly) great character-created lore to start circulating? Since it must be taxing on your staff to develop the mini-lore behind dozens of rare items, you could give the lore crew more time to work on game lore instead of rare item lore :)
And, though it may seem paradoxical, I would like to send my compliments to the weapon/shield lore writer(s), especially the "Vanity" sword snippet. That was superbly crafted lore...

I liked the one on the Feathered Razor (http://forums.thejackcat.com/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=297).
Looks like anyone that finds the really good rares is going to be very happy. :)

At this point, rares only drop from creatures.
Some of the gems found by players during Preview -- for instance, the Defender gem -- were Tier 2 rares. The line between Tier 1 and 2 is perhaps not as obvious as between the other tiers ... but on the other hand that means that there's a lot left to discover.
Players who stopped by the Destiny server last night for our little event got a look at some of the higher tier rare weapons and armor as well.

Why is a +25 to a melee mod a tier 2 rare when maxed meleeD +25% won't ever be more than the +250 meleeD from the Tier 1 meleeD gem?

I found rare #31, +250 mana conversion for 15 minutes. Entirely useless, but I could see some interest in +250 in:
- arcane
- missile defense
- melee defense
all for item activation (this saves a month of gem picking when the timer is back)
I could vaguely see some use for a combat gem of this type, if you wanted to solo a really nasty dungeon (+250 in magic defense when trying to solo the orphanage?)
Finally, +250 in tinkering operations would prove invaluable.
With this example (from completely useless to mildy useful to overpowering), I wouldnt judge the interest of a rare from its tier.
The "oh cool" effect was definitely there at the moment. I was quite happy to find the rare, however useless it proved to be. Will it be the same after my 35th weekly +250 gem? I'm not sure... I still remember my first major years ago, but I hardly remember any of the 8 I found yesterday.

The rares are GREAT
Lets analyze em :)
Healing Kit Rare (unlimited uses, bonus to healing skill as well I think) - In my opinion the is the best one out there by FAR! Props to you guys for these.
Stamina/Mana Healing Kit (unlimited uses) - Thought I saw a screeny of these the other day, interesting spin on the normal kit. Sorta makes recharging to easy though. It is nice to have to be able and pull out a wand to do this making life magic/manaC more valuable to the melee.
Armor Rares - The spells are AWESOME, some sort of quest to bond the rares to you when you die though would be even better. Something you need 5 or so players for that are all high level. I also hope you can get rares on the normal armor types, the new stuff isn't that pretty.
+250 Gems - This is the only one I am upset w/ I understand the tinkering ones, a large portion of the server though has high enough skill to suffice in the Viamontian lands. Another 250 skill *shrug* who needs it.
Props to you all though for the Rares!
