View Full Version : New Graphics engine? Seems very slow/buggy when dealing w/ large groups of ppl...

There are many people playing on modern computers and having terrible slow downs/stuttering/hard-drive accessing in the Viamont town and in other areas of the game - The old AC engine I was able to run on a Pentium 1, 166mmx, 32mb of ram, Voodoo2 12mb lol - this new AC engine needs some serious tweaking.
I'm also sad to say, that this new expansion pack still does look very outdated when compaired to newer MMORPGs so I'm surprised that on my system - AMD XP3200+ @ 2.2ghz, 1GB of PC3200 RAM, Radeon 9800 PRO 256bit that there would be so much slow downs no matter what the settings are at...
Is it possible to go back to the old AC graphics engine, it seemed to handle all the groups of ppl much better....the subway in the old days was PACKED with tons of people and would not suffer with the type of graphics lag i'm experiencing with the new viamont town.

I've noticed a huge slowdown in heavily populated areas as well. In the new Viamont town, my framerate slowed to 1 frame per 4-5 seconds. I couldn't move, and was only able to get out of there by typing to recall to my allegiance mansion.
This is on a 1.8GHz P4, 1GB RAM, GeForce3 Ti 500 64MB vid card at 1280x1024 res with relatively high graphics settings in AC (the UI was too unresponsive to turn them down at the time).
The worst lag I got in ACDM was at huge events like the Ancient Olthoi Queen, with war spells and arrows flying, and even then it was at least 2-5 fps.

I had no problems at all with about 60+ people in town. I have the graphics turned all the way up.
I'm on an AMD Athlon64 FX52 2.2ghz, 1gig RAM, Geforce 6800 ULTRA
*shrug*
I call BS as I happen to have very nearly an identical computer, AMD 64 1 gig ram etc , ( which runs WoW with no problem in the densest pop areas , and I was having craptasic lag , stuttering , cursor degradation , and the list goes on and on

I call BS too as there is no way this weak game would ever require such hardware. If things were as they should be on turbines end there wouldn't be much difference between your system and one with a athlon 1100 and a geforce 3 card because both are capable of rendering full ToD graphics. I think the problem is inadequate bandwidth on turbines part. Even the billing servers die when too many are using them. Thats just sad.

Fresh install, lated drivers even for the bios, everything up to date
System specs
P4 3.6 Ghz Hyperthread
2 gigs Kingston HyperX DDR2
Twin SLI GeForce 6800 GT's on PCI-Express
Twin 120 gig 15,000rpm SCSI drives on Raid 0 with onboard controller
SB Live! Audigy
I still bluescreen, lag, sputter, and at any second I'm expecting my tower to spew its guts out its rear fan port. Something is wrong, its like the engine isnt utalizing DX the way it should because it should be alot more streamlined.

IT could be an ATI issue?
THere are other threads with ppl complaining...They have good systems yet poor performance...

With the way AC: TOD looks, I agree we shouldn't have any problems running the game with the kind of systems we have....The game also takes up a lot of memory....more than WoW or Guild Wars
...Here's a screenshot of how much memory AC: TOD is using - WoW is around the 400-500 mark and Guild Wars is around the 300 mark...these games also look light years better than what AC: TOD Is displaying

I have 3 comps with varying stats, played it fine on 2 of them and the third Ive always known wouldnt be able to play it. Although I didnt try. I was in for about 4 hours when it first opened and really, I had no serious lag problems. Maybe it was the time or something.

huge numbers of people caused the same problems with the old client and they do the same in other games, these are extra ordinary situation in which people are playing with full video settings. give it time to settle down.
The lag issue is normal, remember that players from the original 9 servers are all concentrated into one now plus everyone wants to check out the new areas right away. That leads to a huge amount of people in one single area of the map. I am sure that if you move to another area where there is not so many people, you will not get so much lag. The new towns will be chaos because all the "new" players will want to level their chars first thing they get in the game. Such lag is very normal in such events. We experienced it before when Turbine created that other srever long time ago for open tests (can't remember the name right now) and you also experience it on other games when they open a single server.
Now with that said, I do think that there is a ATI bug right now in the system. I also have an ATI video card and my graphics are acting all erractic. My video card needs to restart itself every so often, graphics disappear, but if I alt-tab out and in back to the game, all the graphics and sounds come back for another while.
So far it is looking good though, just be glad we get a chance to bug test it before we actually buy it. Sony only gave the public less than a week to test their new SWG expansion before releasing and until now it is full of bugs. Just make sure you file detail bug reports so that they get the expansion polished for release :)

Damn. That blows my specs right out of the water, but I'm not having any trouble at all. I've gotta drop the graphics to Medium in Sanamar, but everywhere else works beautifully with graphics set to High and in 1152x864 res (I'm not comfortable with anything higher - I must be going blind :) ).
For comparison:
Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
SB Live! 5.1
Windows XP Home SP2

I think the stutter is my biggest complaint, then the framerate.
Every 3 seconds or so, the screen freezes for a blink, then goes on.
Ive got an AMD Semperon 2400 w/1gb PC3200 Ram and a GEF fx 5700 Video card.
I shouldnt have any issues with this game, but I do. Something is the flow is bottlenecked.

I had lil problem running in the new town full graphics on a few lag spikes ping went up to 200ms
As soon as you got out of town tho things really picked up.
I was on for about 2hrs from midnight to 2am est

I'd like to see the old AC graphics engine handle the same area and see if we experience similair performance issues...I really think you can pinpoint the performance issues on this new graphics engine with poor optimizations
I never remember having exerpeienced this type of lag before when I played early day Asheron's Call and this was during all the Bael'zharon Shadow wars...

LoL
you must have missed the game before Solclaim was put in..it was a bear.

He is talking about computer lag as opposed to internet lag, and he is right the old engine and newer computers can take 200+ characters in one area easy...

Because you BSed about the Darktide lag too. Either that or there's something that you're not telling us about in your computer.
My computer is a pentium 4 4.6 ghz, 512 MB RAM, GeForce 4 MX 4000. It's not a great computer, but it's well over the 'minimum' specs. I logged into Sanamar, and I couldn't move. My computer was going so slow I couldn't even manage to type /marketplace to get out of there.
