View Full Version : Graphics Issues Feedback After the 7/6 Update

This morning we updated the Preview client with some fixes that we hoped would help the several graphics issues that some players are experiencing, including "blue screen of death", crashing, spontaneous reboots, etc.
We do not believe that we have these issues entirely licked yet, but we would like your feedback about how much, if at all, the fixes have helped. Please post in this thread letting us know if things are better, or worse, or no different. Please be as specific as possible about the kinds of behaviors you are seeing after this morning's update.
This remains one of our number one priorities, and some of our best graphics engineers are still hard at work on these problems. Thank you for your assistance -- and your patience -- while we work through these issues.
----
Edit: If you are still experiencing the "blue screen of death" after this morning's update, please go ahead and send in another email with your machine specs to ACTDPreviewBugs@turbine.com. Here's handy instrictions on exactly how to do that.
If you have Windows XP, please do the following:
1. Go to Start -> Run
2. Enter the command "dxdiag" and hit Enter.
3. Click "Save All Information" in the bottom right of the window.
4. Save as a text file.
5. Send an email to ACTDPreviewBugs@turbine.com and attach this text file.
6. In the email, please make a note of your name on the message board to facilitate easy communication.
If you have Windows 2000 or Windows 98, just send an email to ACTDPreviewBugs@turbine.com with as detailed a description of your computer and its hardware as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I played a short while this morning without the bsod. However, when I tried to switch from fullscreen mode to windowed mode, either using ALT-ENTER or the option in the config tab, my client crashed both times. I had been able to go into windowed mode previously although I would get graphical artifacts from time to time.

Just logged in after a format and reinstall. Using the lastest Nvidia drivers for my Nvidia Geforce 4 4200 ti card. Having a refresh rate issue, running the desktop at 85 Hertz, all other games running fine. But AC TOD not locking into that rate, it would seem. As the screen has the blurly look of being out of sync.
I have used the refresh rate setting. No luck. Tis playable, but would give me a headache after a bit. I could just force AC to run at 85 hertz thru the Nvidia display thing, but what fun is that?
Duh, havent tried this, but think it is a screen size issue, lol my bad. :o

Locked up within 1 minute of logging on a character. This happened once before today's patch. What's interesting is that while my toon and the entire background were locked up, the mouse cursor continued to respond (it was the normal golden AC cursor) until I pressed ALT-TAB. Then, it locked up as well, and I was forced to press the Reset button on my tower. Tried CTRL-ALT-DEL, but got no response.
Windows XP x64
AMD FX-55 (Rev 2, San Diego)
4GB DDR500 (Crucial Ballistic Tracer)
ATI Radeon x850XT PE OEM 256mb
ASUS A8V-E Deluxe motherboard w/Realtek ALC850 sound built-in
BIOS, drivers, and Windows are all up-to-date. Routinely scan for spyware and viruses. Running Panda online right now. Will file bug-report with DXDIAG logfile later tonight.

I was a little dis-heartened from crashes over the weekend. Any stray click would do it, so it was not like I could predict it. Clicking on a body in the landscape, on an item in inventory, anything.
Today, I have much joy, I had not any single glitch of any type whatsoever. Played for a couple hours and went click-happy just to make sure :-)
I doff my cap to you for the good work !
I hope that everyone else gets to benefit soon from it also.
thanks again

The problems (not crashing, rebooting or BSOD) I described a few days ago in this thread...
http://forums.ac.turbinegames.com/showthread.php?t=23287
... still exist after the 7/6 update, no change for better or worse.
I'm assuming you only want direct email and dxdiag logs for the nastier problems so I'm just posting here (until and unless otherwise instructed).

I wish I could tell you how it works, but ever since patch, all my characters are stuck in portal space. The character's stats load, and anything they have equipped loads, but none of the backpacks or main inventory loads. All characters behave the same way, so I cannot log in completely. No Envoy responded.

Before the 7/6 patch I was only having 2 issues with the graphics, one was that everything was too dark and the other was the annoying FOV. I got around these by using /day and the brightness for the darkness problem and just narrowed the FOV for the other.
Since the 7/6 patch however, I still have the darkness problem but a few more also. First, my machine randomly freezes up and I have to restart it using the main power switch.
Second, I have quite a bit of "graphics lag" which I didn't have before. Only way around this was to lower the settings to medium or less where I was using high before with (almost) no problems.
Finally, I'm getting all kinds of "missing" textures. They aren't actually missing though, just not loading properly. Things just show up white, not only in the environment, but also in the UI. I can *sometimes* fix this by changing the texture settings or resolution and back again, thus reloading the textures, but that doesn't always work. I can't go over meduim res textures now in the "old" areas and not above "low" on the new island. Don't know if this is due to more detailed textures there or just general lag.
Machine specs:
Intel 865GBF mobo
Celeron D 2.7 Ghz
512MB dual-channel DDR
WinXP Pro (SP2)
DX 9.0c
Onboard AC-3 sound
Onboard 865G graphics (yea, I need a better adapter :P)
All drivers are current and are, in fact, the only ones available. So (unlike nVidia, for example) I don't even have the option of trying older drivers.

I only logged in for a few moments, but I have to say from my end the changes are dramatic! At the default graphics settings I am no longer getting the feeling that I'm a hundred miles from things. The "fuzzy" feeling of everything around me is gone and I can read the text!
I haven't had time to check out the issues with selecting monsters on the radar screen yet, nor the perspective issue with items. I'll look at that later.
I can move the graphics settings higher when out in the old grounds, but still have lag issues any place on the new island, even with graphics at medium.
I'm much more excited now and beginning to really look forward to the release!
Thank you all for the hard work!

I formatted Reinstalled and updated everything this morning in hopes ... sigh ...
I even did not load AC : DM to have a single clean install of TOD ....
I logged in ... did client update, vial update ... hmmm mouse was silver now its the golden color ... ok....
Then I fizzled into Marketplace .... Very VERY LAGGY ....
I see a summoned portal so I hop it.
Sub ... cool - ok .... Oh another portal .. GOOD GOLLY The lag is bad!!
I go to hop that portal and my screen shrinks to 2/3 block in upper left side then black around base right side and BOOM Crashed to error message:

Concering the FOV.
When I have no panels open the look is too much at a down angle. When I open a panel the FOV appears fine. Before the change the no-panel up view was fine.
still can't believe mouse look is toast

Graphics settings are still not being saved on log out. After setting graphics options, (resolution, detail, font, etc.) and logging out, ALL settings are set to defaults upon closing the client and restarting.
On a good note...at least now the client does not crash when changing resolution to anything higher than 1024x768.

Graphics Maxed out.
Just did some hunting on the VoD. No problems at all.
I have had not problems at all during the Preview.
Running a GeForce FX6600GT 256meg with 1.5 gig RAM. Athlon XP 3200+
Went to town for the 1st time in a few days.
In the new capitol I was dropping stuff. Had to drop graphics to med because of graphics lag was horrible in town. Seems unreasonable considering the PC and Video card I am running.
I dropped a Poofy Snowball and crashed to desktop. Logged back in. Stuff slowly started going white. The crashed again.
I gave up after 6 more tries at lowering settings before I got dumped.
I could not stay in game long enough to /bug it.
That's the end of the preview for me since I can't do anything to get out of town.
Otherwise graphics look very nice.

I haven't really " played " yet tho. I bought one of those 260 level tokens and I'm still clicking, and my finger hurts. :p
