View Full Version : What's up with the crashing to desktop?

I've looked for official word on this problem and have found none, so am starting this thread.
I play on Solclaim, and have heard many complaints about the unceremonious crashing of the client. It happens without warning...suddenly, you're staring at your desktop. Is this a problem that the devs know about, and will it be fixed in the next patch? I can't count the number of deaths I've added because of this. The crash leaves my character ingame, usually being beaten upon because I hunt alot! The character only logs out after I start up AC again...and usually logs in at the lifestone. This is getting REALLY old!
Is anyone here having the same problem? I could provide at least 20 names of people I know. Perhaps it's only a problem with the Solclaim server???

add me to that list of 20. Solclaim - often happens with AND without decal running.

Well, this still happens with star wars galaxies. Sometimes whole land blocks crash. One time I came coronet (100s of people in peak hours). And no one was there. Although for AC I have never heard of this happening.

I have noticed a pattern in the Drops as Sharhee well knows and I believe experienced. It seems to be tied to certain characters. I have a Macer on my account and never ever get dropped when playing her. On that same account is my UA character and he gets dropped all the time. Sharhee's Axer gets dropped on a regular basis and yet her Cook never gets dropped (and possibly her archer is immune to the Crash) My wife has had similar experiences, so I am lead to believe that this may character information related maybe? or just dumb luck?

The ctd's seem random to me. sometimes i can go 7 hours other times 7 minutes. What I find really strange is that I seldome die even when fighting a horde of critters. It's like I instantly leave the game.

This happens to me in the 80+ Brood Hive all the time. Especially in the Noble room.

It does seem to happen more often while fighting. Happened with tuskers the other night (yes, I know this isn't the most scientific of examples, considering the other variables on tusker island), and it's happened repeatedly in various other places (mostly olthoi).
Never kills me though. I just re-log into the game...that action severs your previous connection with the servers so they don't wait the 45-second timeout. That way your character isn't standing in some dungeon in combat mode letting mobs wail on him/her because there isn't really a client connected. Maybe I'm just lucky that I'm able to force that logout quickly enough that my toon doesn't die. *shrug*

it happens to me everyonce in awhile since jan patch. today i was fighting a drudge bloodletter and getting pegged by lugian boulders. i had a lil lag and then i was at desktop. this was on wintersebb just east of mt lethe drop.
I have also been getting these drop to desktop with no warning
also every once in a while I get a "cannot draw clip region" and freeze ...I have a amd 64 bit with a top end vid card and an excellent DSL service , I have no trouble with other more graphically intense games
it occurs with and without decal running , with and without using drakiers

I has happened to me the four times I have been in the 80+ hive with decal running since the Jan patch. I forgot to turn it off the last time (wed night) so I haven't had a buff in there yet without decal to see if I crash without it.
The odd thing was that in all four cases I was in mid attack. I froze in the full extension of the thrust (piercing attack with sword).
On the four trip, 3 other people crashed while I was in there.

I think this is a Decal problem, not Turbine. Just an opinion here but I never crash.
Never heard any of this crashing till Decal started coming up.. then all of the sudden it's a plague.
I am sure there are people with conflicts because of hardware or drivers and such, but the "Blink" to desktop seems most likely attributed to decal. At least that seems to be the case on the Utilities board on VN

23 times since patch, and counting.
It's ALWAYS when I'm casting a spell, which also means that it also happens when I'm in the middle of a spawn.
So annoying :(

I am a huge Decal supporter, so this is NOT an attack on Decal.
However, I do believe this is a Decal issue, as I have yet to reproduce the problem with Decal fully unloaded (not just plugins turned off.)
Anyone know if Decal has an official message forum where we can discuss this and maybe submit information about the bug?

I haven't had it happening too much - I think maybe 3 times max. I can't recall the other times, but two nights ago I was in the Luggie Cit near Lin, on my archer, and I crashed to the desktop. There was not another soul in the place. It seemed to be at the moment my buffs went and I started getting the "Buff whatever has expired" messages. My toon apparently logged out immediately as I was no worse off when I finally got back in. Ctd always seem to require complete restarts on my system otherwise logging back in through the zone it simply doesn't want to connect.
I rather chalked it up to decal - dunno if that's true for certain but most of my crashes have occured (during my time of playing AC) from a plugin conflicting with some other plugin.
Other than the lag on Tusker Isle (Tusker Holding (I believe we were in?) was horrible, yet Tusker Emporium was barely affected), the only thing else I've noticed is occasional lag spikes (packet loss goes up significantly) and an extended amount of time when recalling to my Cottage (however not when to our clan's mansion, which seems odd). When recalling to my Cottage, it seemed to help the game refresh my toon's new location by trying to get off the portal gem instead of standing there waiting for the area to load around me.
anyway, just some miscellaneous thoughts.

I and a vassal of mine both got pitched off the game inside the Subterranean Farm atabout the exact same point and both at different times (time difference of about 5-10 minutes.) The disconnects occurred in a tunnel where the Gold Wasps and Olthoi Workers both attack you (neither of us did a /loc, sorry) - . It happens right when the mobs crowded around and closed in.
I found it odd that we both got disconnected at the same point.
Both of us, when we relogged, were met with all the mobs we were fighting dead, around us in a circle but with what appeared to be full respawns of the same mobs in the rooms around us, even though it was only seconds since we'd been pitched off the server. Moving from that tunnel into one of the farm rooms and then fighting the trailing mobs did not result in disconnect - no other lag or disconnections occured anywhere else in the farm for either of us.

Soclaim here also:
Up until this patch, never had a problem gettting crashed to desktop. I'm not using Decal at all, so that's not the problem.
What I've noticed, is that I only get the crashes in certain dungeons (never on surface yet), and always happens when I go into fellowship. Sometimes I last a few min, sometimes it's just seconds after I'm recruited. If I stay out of fellow, I seem to be ok. I've tested on the surface with fellows, and no problems there, just something about indoors and fellows that boots me :(

On HG while running the bobo quest yesterday, we lost 3 people at different times throughout the first and second dungeons. They logged back in within seconds saying they were dropped to the desktop. All 3 were running decal. 2 claimed they turned decal off while they were dropped. None were dropped a second time during the quest. I don't use decal, and I have yet to be dropped to the desktop this month.

Make sure DECAL is not loaded before reporting here. This is NOT the same as having everything turned off.
If the Decal icon is in your tray, it IS affecting AC, whether or not you have any filters, plugins or anything checked.
If you still see regular CTD with DECAL not even loaded, then it could be a Turbine issue (though most often my experience has been then its a video/sound driver problem, not AC)
MIdnightFire7

This happens even with no decal icon in the tray. usually in combat, In a fellow, in one of the Matron Hives. On WintersEbb. Atleast for me.

The problems I and others have reported were neither Decal nor driver-related.
Considering the amount of legacy support AC has always provided, I cannot see how a sound or video driver issue could suddenly cause a disconnect only in certain dungeons, during certain actions, or in groups of certain types of mobs. Especially since the same drivers (at least in my case) were not causing the issue before the January prop.
In addition, Turbine themselves acknowledge that the change made with the January prop in their compilation procedure is at the forefront of their investigation of the problems that appeared with the January prop.
For me, this is an issue that appeared with the January prop.
It appears that the posts in this thread are to provide the devs further feedback on the issue of Crashing To Desktop. Part of that information certainly includes whether or not Decal was running.
Regardless of what is eventually discovered to be at fault, a multitude of players experiencing CTD errors is "a Turbine issue." Identification of the cause of behavior affecting normal usage of any software is a developer issue. Once identified, if the cause is third party in anyway, then caveats, work-arounds, driver rollbacks and other actions can officially be reccommended as a solution.
So I'm sure Turbine won't mind even if someone posts on their forum that they only experience CTD when running Decal.

im on solclaim as well, experiencing the same thing.
quite frustrating, as there seems to be no rhyme nor reason. i can go all day w/o a crash, then crash 3 times in 30 minutes.
please help us!
I seem to be getting an occasional memory leak that ultimately results in a crash to the desktop.
It seems to be related to my system's focus going off AC for a while. I am getting this leak with or without Decal but Decal does make this issue worse.
While I'm NOT USING Decal, the problem seems to start when I alt-tab or accidentally hit the Windows Key. If I accidentally hit my sleep/power down button (both set to trigger standby rather than powerdown) then AC instantly goes to not-responding and jumps up to using 400k system resources. Needless to say, this causes issues.
If I'm using Decal, these same problems start occuring almost randomly.

I've been crashing to the desk top randomly for years. I've never seen an adequate answer for this problem. Lots of folks claim it's Decal, but I crash to the desktop without Decal on. Heck, Many times, the client aborts on the way to get the game started up. Sometimes while connecting to the servers, sometimes at the character selection screen...you click the character you want and poof...desktop.
There's also been an alt-tab problem. Used to be back when the game started that you could easily alt-tab out of the game to browse CoD or something to figure out where you needed to go in the game. After a while, I would randomly freeze up when I Alt-tabbed. Then when I loaded Decal, at some point, Alt-tabbing would invariably crash the client. Now, even without decal going, the client crashes if I Alt-tab.
I really hope that when they develop the expansion, Turbine will go through every line of code in AC with a fine toothed comb to smooth it all out. I can imagine that 4 years of monthly patches and hot fixes would cause numerous unpredicatable hiccups with the game.
Lately I've been getting rather sudden drops off the server. As in I don't see any yellow or red link, I am in the middle of sending a tell, I see the tell get sent when I hit enter, next second I'm at the Server Disconnect screen.
With Decal, I've sometimes crashed to the desktop when I click on the icons on the Decal toolbar...odd.

Ok, I just crashed to desk top. When I did it also changed my 3D set up so I had to turn 3d back on again. Not sure why it does that.
It happens mostly when I portal.
Portaling was very laggy tonight so I logged off. Others were complaining about lag but not nessesarily portal lag.
Changing charecters crashes me to desk top sometimes too.

Question, are there people that are having this crashing bug that aren't using Drakier's Dual Client?
Both my husband and I have had to reinstall in the last 24 hours on two seperate computers. Something's corrupted a file, and I can't figure out what's doing it.

Pretty much everyone I've talked to has had frequent client crashes, whether or not they use Decal or Drakier's. Those utilities do aggravate the situation, but they aren't the only sources of crashes. There seems to be something wrong with the AC client itself. Obviously the change in compilers has caused a number of issues, so there's a good chance it has something to do with this as well.

Thanks. (36 crashes since patch)
There's a new release of Decal out (as of a few minutes ago) to address this. Version 2.6.1.1 has been released and according to Hazridi: "This fixes two issues: The dreaded Decal crash to desktop, and the less used PointerState memloc."
This won't solve everyone's issues, I'm sure... but could help some of you.

I'd really like to know if Turbine is working on this, or has any suggestions to fix it. After all, that's why I started this thread in the first place.
My crashing happens anywhere, anytime, without warning (no screen freeze, just BAM to the desktop), and it does leave my char ingame to get killed while I quickly scramble to start up the client again so my char is removed from the world. I crashed once while running and ended up several clicks from where I crashed...not in a dungeon. Often, it will crash when I try to enter chat mode, but that's not always the case.

I have had this for a few months.
Decal or not doesn't matter. This has been an issue that a lot of people has had for a long time, some people seem to be able to fix it by getting an external sound card if they're using an on board one, or by getting a more powerful power supply (300W ->450W).
I've tried the first and while it didn't help completely it has decreased the CTD's from 2-4 times per hour when it goes into crash mode to once ever hour or so. I still can't quest or do anything that puts me in a situation where i might loose my gear.
Of course the CTD's has skyrocketed since the last patch, though I managed an entire hour today without a crash :D

I have had this crashing issue myself - the only thing to add to the discussion is this:
I don't have decal - at all. (nor a dual client, had no idea they were that common now)
I have recently reactivated and have been learning to play again - so I am doing this crashing in *extremely* low level areas (such as the Shoushi river, Shoushi grotto, outside Yaraq, etc.)
so, not the tuskers, and not decal. Just AC, crashing to the lobby.

My husband has been having this problem too playing on FF, it is when he is in the middle of battle and then pop goes the server and when he logs back on he is usually at the lifestone. It happens with and without decal so I dont think decal is the problem either. My account doesnt crash but his does, this I cant explain. My comp is an older model than his, I use windows ME he uses XP. Could it have something to do with XP?

MissMae I believe others have experienced the crashing to desktop even without running Decal, so Decal is not the one to blame here.
I have been crashed several times now - and so far without getting myself killed, but my luck will only carry me thus far. Last time I logged in and I had 33 hp left.
I have been crashed hunting Olthoi at Matron Hive 20+, 40+ & 60+ and even while hunting on Caul with my mage - so the problems seems to be occuring all over and only since January patch.

I play on WE and I've also started to have a ctd problem.
It happnes with or without decal. It's only started to happen since the Jan patch.
I'm running winME on PIII 800 mhz machine with 256 ram and 32 meg ATI magnum vid card. My machine has no integration of sound or video. Everything is a seperate card.
It's worked perfectly for the past 4years I've been playing AC..up until the past 3 or 4 weeks.
MS had me update to the latest version of directx and also updated my vid card driver just yesterday. The problem seems to have gotten worse since doing that.
My machine locks up solid when the ctd happens. Once I was already at my desktop and I got an error msg. that said something to the effect of " a runtime.dll error occured in the client.exe".
My ctd's are happening when I'm in peace mode and when I'm transferring items from pack to pack or to another player, etc. Twice it's happened when I've attempted to switch characters. btw I don't use dual log.
I can loggin and play for quite awhile and nothing will happen, then all of sudden I'll crash 6 times in a half hour.
Last night I deleted and reloaded both ACDM and MS gaming Zone files. i was able to log back in and play for about 45 minutes then I was off to bed. I'm going to see how it goes when I get home tonight.
Very, very frustrating after almost 4 years of playing with no problems of any kind, to have this start suddenly happening.
Something is definately gone wrong someplace and I'm begining to doubt very much if it's my system.

Whether it be AC or Decal or a plugin.
So if you experience this crash to desktop often, a program on your computer is failing often. Troubleshoot your own system to find the cause.
AC Dev's have no control over software failure on your own system.

think the question here is why is it failing when it hasn't failed before. What has caused it to all of sudden start failing. What's the common denominator in each instance of failure for all of us?
You don't need to defend Decal, AC or any other devs here.
I haven't seen anyone attack them in this thread.
Troubleshooting system failures is a very tough job even for the most skilled people.
I was on the phone with MS techs last night for over 2 hours trying to find a cause and a fix for this and we got nowhere.

Sorry that my post came off as unsympathetic.
I like to start with trial and error troubleshooting....
Then reinstalling the software product and then the add-ons one at a time which can usually help find the source of the problem.
That might be a tactic to try.

Anyone out there able to suggest anything to fix this?
The crash happens whether I have decal loaded or not, so it's not decal related.
It has started happening in past week and in the past 2 or 3 days happens a lot...last 6 times in half an hour.
So far I've:
Been on the phone with MS tech suport over 3 hours to no avail.
Done 2 system restores
Loaded direct x 9, unloaded directx9 (yes it can been done despite what MS website says)
Downloaded and installed the latest vid driver for my board (ATI magnum 32 mb)
reinstalled direct x 8.1
deleted and reinstalled ACDM and MS gaming zone
once when I ctd I was alt tabbed and an error msg came up saying a "runtime.dll error in client .exe"..which the tech at MS said was definately a directx problem (this is when I deleted directx9 and reinstalled directx8.1)
Nothing is working. I'm dead in the water until I can find out what's wrong and get it fixed.

Rumour has it (and this is only a rumour, mind you) that the bug has something to do with the power consumption of AC.
Try the following:
1) If you have on board sound, install a sound card (this decreased the drops for me, onboard sound cards suck juice from the mother board)
2) Disconnect as many peripherals as possible, printers, scanners, even your cd-rom drive
3) Buy a new, more powerful, power supply.
Actually i've heard all these as working solutions for different people.
In regards to software failures. The only app that has a software failure in my case is AC. It might be connected to 3rd party products such as directx, but it doesn't really matter. Direxctx is a part of the system unless it is stated directly that ACdoes not support it. My company works a lot with Websphere, bit just because WS has a 2 face lock bug, doesn't mean we can let our system malfunction every now and then. We have to either work with IBM on a solution or work around the bug.
That said, I know these things are a mess and I don't envy Turbine. And the problem here is it so dang inconsistent, I simply can't find the pattern and I'm usually pretty good at sniffing out the bug.
I would like to hear from the devs about it though, even if it would just be speculation from their side... :)

Thanks for your input.
As of last night I thought I had it fixed.
But it started up again today.
All my components are non integrated.
I also have 450w power supply.
I have kept records of when it happens and what I am doing.
In all instances it seems to be when I am in peacemode and chatting.
EDIT - ok this happened yesterday for the first time while in the middle of combat, while i wasn't chatting. Now I'm convinced it's a totally random thing.
Let's here from others on this. Maybe it can be tracked down to a specific thing that's occuring while performing even a simple task like chatting.
I'm not blaming the devs, but it very well could be a bug that is triggerred by doing something insignifcant.
Turbine..please can any of you comment on this thread if you read it.
thanks

Yes freezing and watching everything kill you is always fun to. The spastic grafics is strange to since I updated my grafics card and it's brand new this is odd also.

I'm on HG and it happens whether I am in combat or not. I do run decal.
The only pattern I have seen is this:
About 40% of the time when I first click play the game hangs for 5-10 seconds. If that happens then the computer will change focus (as if I alt-tabbed out) away from the game usually within a minute after logging a character into the game. When the game loses focus it often is while in portal space which causes many of my icons to become distorted when I alt-tab back. I have to log out when the icons become distorted and log back in. After that I seem to have no problems.
To avoid that when I see the game hang I wait til I see the character selection screen and I go ahead and alt-tab out of the game then back in which for some reason avoids the problem above.
However, when I do the alt-tab trick I will almost always crash to desktop within 5 minutes of playing. When I enter the game again after crashing I have no more problems for that game session.
Weird but hopefully that will help the devs while trouble-shooting.

Happens a lot, and even more wierd...If our mansion buffbot opens sub for me, in 90% of the cases I land on my desktop, if others summon it, it works alright.
We need to boot him as buffbot for summoning bad portals I guess :D

I CTD often with my battlemage while casting war. The lifemage, axer and thrower never crash.
Decal or no decal.
I'm moving this thread to our Technical Support forum.

I have started crashing to the desktop too.
I also had another weird phenomenon happen tonight. I logged in and all my packs on the right, including Foci were invisible. All the items in my main pack were invisible too, but if I clicked on the box, it would tell me what item was there.

Everytime I log in since this patch, I get kicked to the desktop as soon as I target something in my pack. :(
