There are a number of things I've learned, as a vassal, patron, and eventually monarch, that I find really help newer players.
First and foremost, when you select a patron, pick someone who will help you and teach you. Your choice in a patron can effect your gaming experience from then on.
I encourage all new players to avoid what is called "powerleveling" on thier first character. Powerleveling is the practice of a higher level character assisting a lower level one by helping it kill mosters that would normally be too powerful, thereby greatly accelerating a characters developement. The reason I advise against this early on is that it can create a situation where the player doesn't mature as fast as the character, so never fully masters the character's abilities.
I strongly advise against using "buff bots" - automated characters that supply high level spells for a fee. It's been my experience that early use leads to dependance on them, crippling your effectivenes and ability to operate independantly when you mature. It's possible to correct this later, but its much easier to learn as you start than it is to break an old habit.
Avoid macros. Completely aside from the Code of Conduct issues, macros are a crutch. They tend to retard player's abilities, and well, they can get you banned.
My most important advice, though, is simply to play your character. Learn what it can do, push yourself to accomplish more, as you do in real life.
Once you've developed a good sense of what you as a player are capable of, feel free to take advantage of the bots and powerleveling, be a patron yourself, and have a great time.
Take care, and if you select Thistledown as your home, look me up. I'm always up for a good conversation.
