Asheron's Call does not have drab gameplay like the other games.
Your RL coordination will lend to your characters success. ie- you can dodge. Learning to identify the 'tells' of the different monsters that cast spells will be instrumental in staying alive and avoiding spells while fighting mobs.
The same can be said for rock throwers, and missile characters. (Lugians, for instance)
When brazen enough, and confident enough in your ability to dodge - there are ways to force the MOB into dropping his ranged attack and going melee attack. For example, w/ Lugians - running behind them while they're 'pulled back' with a rock (right before the throw) - they'll switch to melee.
Learn to master your movements (attacking and dodging), the AI, and use your judgement.
