What servers to play on?

Can someone give me a breif idea of the differences and character of the different servers worlds?

Darktide is a PVP-only server.

All other servers are essentially the same. ('optional pvp' by going to a shrine to turn PK)

All servers are 100% identical WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DARKTIDE (I'll go into detail a bit more in a bit). Some worlds have been around since the game started. Some worlds, Winterseb and Verdantine (spelling?) were added later on.

Darktide is player vs player. Anyone can attack anyone. If you were killed by a player you have 5 minutes of grace. You can neither attack, nor be attacked by someone (although monsters can still attack you). Darktide is a total different ballgame from non PvP worlds. Players on non PvP worlds generally carry a bunch of $$$ items so that when they get killed during battle, they don't drop any of their armor or weapons or a special quest item, but rather drop these $$$ items (we call them Death Items). On Darktide you have to replenish your Death Items regularly as other players can loot your corpse if they kill you. This also means that certain quest items which players on a non PvP world love to have, are almost worthless to someone on Darktide because they will quite often be dropped when you are killed by another player.

Personally If you are brand new to the game I would start on any world but Darktide. Get a feel for how the controls and UI work and then if you want to give the harsh reality of PvP a try, create a character on Darktide.

On non PvP worlds you can go player killer lite (pklite) these are pink dots on the radar, where you do not drop any items when you are killed OR as someone stated you can goto the player killer shrine and go Player killer (pk) these are red dots on your radar. Non pk can only kill monsters. Pklite can only kill other pklite or monsters. and PK can only kill other PK or monsters.

As the other posters have mentioned, all worlds except Darktide are basically the same, and all claims to one being better than the other are simply opinions... Of course I have my own opinion on that. :D

Anyway, I would recommend you try the Thistledown server. I am part of a small guild being started there, that focuses on helping new players. Check out our website if you like, and see if your interested (http://www.lightlords.4t.com/).

If you are really into lore and exploring, basically the same things that are available in any single player game, but with people around you. I suggest you join one of the many Normal Servers.

If you want more than that, choose Darktide

If you are a person who enjoys a challenge and risk.... holding cities and smiting enemies, message me on darktide. In game as Oblique.

I'll help you get started. I usually run my character as a buff bot when I'm not actually playing and he has ties to a few leveling dungeons.

Our allegiance has 2 of the top 10 players on darktide.

Leafcull has serveral players on it. Check out Zyz monarch, we do things the old fashion way kill kill kill......we help each other out, from high level to low.

I joined when the Gekk and Zyz monarch merged.......thought to myself hmmmm I'll stay for a bit and see how these guys are. Well several months later and I'm still here :) I found out there are a good group people here and we have lots fun...hunting..... joking, ect. Just got to watch Zyz he's a nut, but Seto (his wife) keeps him in check :D Zyz I had to....ROFL

Eventually I will play some on darktide, but its going to be awhile before I attempt it, just switching to the AC interface makes me feel like my character can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

I've spent some time looking at guild sites, forums, etc and it does look like every server has a great group of players. What little I've played so far has certaily confirmed that.

I haven't played any MMOs since I quit UO last year. I played UO sporatically since its release - Boy that was a crazy night. I'm wishing I had been around over here for ACs hey-day too.

Now of course I need to decide whether or not to stay up till 2:00am and play some more...
