View Full Version : Which Operating System do you use?
For purposes of research, we've devised this little poll...
Starting at the top, choose the FIRST Operating System that you are currently using to play Asheron's Call, and then submit your poll answer.
Thanks!
oops, you cannot see the poll from the dev tracker post

While I use XP on my main computer, my Clan buffbot uses 2000, and my tradebot on my laptop uses ME.
So I use all 3.
Just fyi that I'm sure many people use multiple.

Is there any other OS but XP :)
Windows2000 is much more stable from my experience than either XP, 98, or 95. All of those seem to have tendencies to munch dll files at random intervals.

Aye, which is why I specified to just click on the first one that you use. In your case, I hope you clicked on WindowsME.

I used XP for a year, then switched to 2000 pro back in March.
I will use 2000 pro on every machine I own until the OS is no longer viable (like 98, etc).
XP had too much frill for me, too fancy looking and offered nothing that 2000 couldn't (save for like 1 or 2 advanced features i'd never use anyway).
:)
With 2k I can have my classic desktop, no wallpaper, nada.

Actually Ibn, I selected XP. That is on my main computer and the one I play the most on. The trade bot (ME) on my Laptop, only passes out scrolls to my Clan, he isn't on all the time. The buffbot is pretty important to the clan, but that is on my old computer.
The reason I selected XP was because if need be, I would upgrade my other computers to XP, but I won't downgrade my good computer to something else.

3 accounts 3 PC's all win2k
The only real problems I have had have been video related. One was solved with a driver upgrade. The other was solved with an OS. patch.

i see most use xp, therefore, many would argue that xp is the best, however, if there is a PERFECT OS for asherons call 1.0, what is it ? i want it. because this 466 e-mach does pretty well on ac for having dail-up and 22 bps downloads with its 256 mb of straineed ram on a decent yet not elite 4 meg drive. i want to build a second pc so me and my wife can play ac together and i only want to buy the best OS for this systems to do the ONE thing that i want the pc to do and do well : play AC. :D

I use Mandrake Linux 9 with Wine to play AC. I really wish that you guys would come out with a Linux client for those of us who prefer not to use Microsoft operating systems. I used to have Win XP running on a different partition just for the sole purpose of playing AC. I removed it though because I felt it was a waste of my drive space just for one game. One of the reasons I quit playing AC2 was because I couldn't get it running under Wine. At this point I have quit playing AC because it has been giving me too much trouble under Wine. If they ever come out with a Linux client I'll start playing again.

XP is very stable (if you have all the service packs and patches). It's just got a horrible confusing interface lol.

I use both Win2k and XP for AC.
I wish I could use Linux, though. I would drop any other game from consideration and stick purely with AC if there was a Linux client.

Although I voted for Win 98, I have 2 computers, one with Win 98SE and the other with XP home.
I wonder if Turbine is going to release a version for the Mac with the expansion.

Like the others here, I play various characters on several different computers, all with varying operating systems. I voted for the lowest level operating system, i.e., Win 98.
My main uses Win XP. :)

Greetings,
Currently, Windows 98...however, with Microsoft saying they wouldn't be supporting Win 98 much longer, perhaps it's time to upgrade the computer and OS to Windows XP.
Hope this info helps!

I'm running win2k pro SP4. No problems here although I had a hard time initially getting AC to run on this comp (it was a problem with my modem). I'm hoping that future expansions will be more geared towards XP/2k instead of win32 like DM.
Tesla, I've found that ME runs AC smoother than anything else I've tried (I've tried everything except XP). I'm considering going to a dual boot setup and allocating a 2 gig drive just so I can run AC on ME. I always hear about ME throwing up BSoD's every few minutes but I've never seen one. From my experience, it's best NOT to get the updates for it. Just install it, maybe update IE, DX, and your drivers, and leave it alone.

Yikes! The last time I hooked a non-updated ME system to the Net it was hammered with attacks and BSoD'd in less than 5 minutes. Give it a try. It's really amazing how fast it will come down. I've never had a problem with an updated system though. The trick is to get the updates on a CD and apply them before you hook it directly to the Net and then keep it updated with regular Windows Updates visits.

I can't multitask using Windows ME while I play AC very well, I don't think you could say it runs smoothest, considering I have to restart my computer every third alt-tab basically

Windows ME and XP
If I fire up the third its 98 2nd ED.
All 3 run AC with no problems.:)

This would be a better and more accurate poll if you had allowed us to click EACH that applies. I understand you are probably trying to specifically target the number of folks still using 98, etc even if they use a higher version on another comp.
See the problem is that there are 5 comps in the house, 2 of which use XP, 2 use 98, and the fifth.....ummm dunno whats on it. But I can only vote for ONE of them, and they each receive equal time and should be included in the survey that I am assuming is a "research" for the expansion and what level of tech you need to target with it.
Thanks for your feedback folks!
