Sorry to hear about your loss...unfortunately, you do have to watch out for thieves in this game and there is nothing that Turbine can do about your permitting someone to loot your body and the person not returning the items.

Also, you don't drop plat scarabs normally on death...so there is no way that you lost 50 of them. They might drop if you are down to basically nothing, but that would be more than one body drop and it certainly wouldn't be 50 on just a few bodies.

You might have better luck identifying the thief if you post on your server boards on VNBoards...perhaps someone knows which monarchy he belongs to and can possibly influence him to return your items.

I also would not post any personal info on here, like your phone number, there are alot of freaks around who might take advantage of that.

As a newer player you need to be aware there ARE theives in the game, do not trust someone you have not known a while. Think of people in this game like someone you meet on the street. If i dropped my wallet that had $300 in it, would i ask someone i just met on the street to go pick it up for me and actually believe he will bring it back to me..........

I'm sorry for your loss and you learned a harsh lesson about ac some of the people in it

I'm still not sure how you lost plats though, they dont drop on death..........Unless you gave them to him.

I'm always sorry to hear something like this has happened.
First of all get yourself some Death Items, that will drop when you die, that you will not miss. You can purchase robes for around 40,000pyreals from some of the mages that will drop instead of your armor. You can purchase the more expensive portal gems and mana charges that will drop and can be easily replaced.

I agree also that you should post this on the VN boards if you havn't all ready.
The website it here, just click on the server you are on and register and post.
http://vnboards.ign.com/Asherons_Call_Server_Boards/c5019/

You may attract the attention of the persons clan, patron or monarch and possibly get them to get the stuff back from this person. If nothing else you will warn people to beware of this theif. This is a role playing game and some people choose to play the negative roles.

This is game imitating life, so you'll find great people, you'll find bad people.
As Fallen God said don't let strangers get your Death Items.

uh.... two bodies, and 50 plats.... not happening, no way shape or form

stacked items ONLY DROP THE TOP ITEM including master mage gems

so the most plats you would have dropped are TWO, one for each body

likely the phone number is fake as well.... if this guy gets freebies from turbine... I've got a great sob story in the making that they need to listen to!!! :D

Well, If this is the Williamg, I know. He's not lvl 84. Williamg I know is part of the allegiance "Ou Wheen". He's a decent guy, and this doesn't sound like him, since he is alot higher lvl. So this guy is, 1) trying to scam other people, and 2) not who he says. Also, I doubt if just because you are on another server you can use the same name, but just in case, the williamg I know is on frostfell.

actually, I've dropped a plat on death.... I had nothing but comps on, not even a robe

but I only dropped ONE plat because the game only takes one thing from EACH STACK of items it can drop (that is why master mage gems can not be stacked and used as DIs at the same time, unless you have 15 stacks of 25 gems per stack ;))

There are certain parts of the claim that do not sound right. As I recall, platinum scarabs are bonded. They do not drop on death.

Second you can not be in the Withered Lugian dungeon at level 84. It level 100+ restrict. If you are outside, it should not be a big deal to recover your corpse. You just recall to the outside and it get your stuff. There usually quite a crowd outside tormenting the Lugians.

The phone number is not a valid number. It is within the north american dialing plan and assigned to Sprint PCS. It does not appear the block this number belongs to is currently active in Sprint network.

Well if this is legit punctuation and grammar are your friends. ;)

Death Item System explained:

Answered by srand on 08/27/2002
========================================
"I'm going to summarize the entire process of figuring out what drops on death for you here. I know, you didn't ask for the entire process, but I'm using you to post the complete information that I want to get out to players. Sorry about that. *grin*

First, how much you drop depends on your level:
- When you are level 5 or under, you don't drop anything when you die.
- From level 6 to level 10, you lose half your coins (not trade notes) and nothing else.
- From level 11 to level 20, you lose half your coins and possibly one non-wielded item (that is, something that you were neither wearing nor holding in your hands).
- From level 21 to level 35, you lose half your coins and some number of non-wielded items.
- After level 35, you lose half your coins and some number of items. At this point, you *can* drop items that you were wearing or holding.

Now, in those last two cases, I said 'some number'. Some number here is equal to your level divided by 10, rounded down, plus a random number between 0 and 2. So from level 21 to 29 you can lose between two and four items; from 30 to 39 you can lose three to five items; from 40 to 49 you can lose four to six items, and so forth. By level 126 you can be losing up to 14 items!

(One caveat here: if you were killed in a PK battle, you always lose items as if you were over level 35, although the exact number you lose is still determined by your real level / 10. In other words, PK deaths do not get the special protection from item loss that NPK deaths get under level 35.)

So that's how many items you lose on death -- but how do we determine *which* items are lost? This is where the categories come into it.

Each item in the game has a particular item type associated with it. The actual types (categories) are listed below. When we are deciding what items you drop on death, we make a list of all the items you are carrying, sorted by value (high value first). But we may adjust their values in two ways. If the item is not the most valuable item in that category, then we cut its value in half. And whether or not it is the most valuable item in its category, we randomize its value a little bit to mix things up. (To answer your first question explicitly, the cutting-the-value-in-half is not cumulative -- the second- and third- and fouth-most valuable items of one category all have their values halved, not halved and then quartered and then eighthed.)

Now note that we still keep these things in a list sorted by adjusted value -- so its possible to have your two expensive weapons listed first and second, if the value of the second weapon cut in half is still higher than the value of the third item. What I am trying to get at here is that we do not segregate the list based on item type; we only use item type to determine how we adjust the value of the item.

Finally, we go down the list and mark the first # things as dropped, where # is the number of items we have calculated that you are going to drop this death. For instance, if you are level 48, you will drop the first 4-6 items on that list.

The categories of items are:
- melee weapons
- missile weapons
- magic casters (like orbs & wands)
- armor
- clothing
- jewelry
- food
- gems
- components
- mana stones
- crafting ingredients
- parchments & books
- keys
- tradenotes
- miscellaneous

(I've left out a few categories -- like lifestones -- because you aren't likely to be carrying an item of that type.)

And there you have it -- the entire process of item loss on death spelled out in terrible detail. I hope that answered your questions sufficiently."

This is the real williamg in Frostfell I use to be in mark's allegiance then I was kicked out for ucming but yeah I dont think it was quiet 50 plats but I know it was around that much because I had just got some before I went to withered. I am also level 84 I just got back into the game this week my patron in wheens allegiance was Artifax aka Paul and then I went to puddy's allegiance because of the ucm thing but other than that I did loose the armor it was just the pants and the top I recieved everything else back from dustie. I was shocked because I thought that I left a body but we both went back and the body was not there with anything for what I lost so I dont know my number is 1-979-575-4944 that is yes a sprint pcs phone and it does work if you dial 1 then the number I will answer 24/7 please feel free to call me and talk about it

Ahem....cough...cough....PWNED! First off William, why in the name of all that is holy would you choose such a hideous color to display your message in? Second, this action by this mystery player is what is known as griefing!

Yes, I'm somewhat of an expert on griefing. You see, on my home world of Wintersebb, I'm known as Ilumini: The Griefer King. That's right, I've surpassed all other griefers to rule them all.

In fact, I've single handedly generated more complaints into Turbine's urgent assistence than anyone else. I kinda take pride in that. It's tough to be the most complained about person in all of the Asheron's Call game. But I do my humble best to live up to the name.

What this person did to you was sucker you into giving him access to your corpse, most likely by posing as your endearing and helpful friend, and then made off with your stuff, leaving only a pyreal or two on your corpse to teach you a lesson. It's a simple trick, but you'd be surprised how often it works.

What makes this even more agitating to you is the fact that you, quite literally, handed over permission for this person to rob you blind. Now, there are quite a few younger players on Asheron's Call, and they tend to be far more receptive to this particular crime than most other people. What's worse is that in events, such as live events hosted by devs, the excitement of the moment and the thought of a possible lost corpse can be heavy enough that players will give their permission to just about anyone, on the spur of the moment too.

Take my word for it, kids. I know.

The beauty of all this, at least from your standpoint, is that there are alot of kind and generous people on whatever world you happen to play on. These people hate the likes of villains such as myself, and feel great pity for the innocent people that fall prey to my type's machinations. In other words, chances are highly good that some goody-good on your world will not only replace what you've lost, but chances are there that what you receive may actually be better than what you've lost.

I remember fondly, one of my greatest exploits. You see, I pretended to be a person who had been the victim of the dreaded Griefer King ILUMINI, and begged for help. Kind individuals actually gave me tons of incredible items to help me back on my feet after falling prey to such a hated, and vile man.

Little did they know they were adding to the coffers of the very man whose presence they were seeking to repair! Ah, the joys of villainy!

It wasn't until I received my last gift that I revealed my true nature and the despair really set in amongst those who had helped me.

My recommendation in your situation is to go to www.acvault.com and on whatever message boards are there for your world. Post for help there. Chances are good they are going to mock you a while for being naive, but someone somewhere will feel sorry and help you.

Just my thoughts on the matter. Next time, be a tad more careful will you?

As much as I despise the type of player Storyteller is... I agree with him

I've been around this game too long not to see it happen. There are true innocents (you can substitution the term "supid people" if you are so inclined) who are abused by career griefers... and there are the much more subtle ones who attempt to take advantage of your sense of "right" and "fair play."

Honey... I've heard it all. From "I allowed someone to look at my armor and he logged" to "I have to sell my computer to pay rent" or "My best friend is in the hospital and needs money to pay his/her bills."

At this point, I've become cynical. If I can help someone with basics, I will... but the days of: "let me give you the best I have so you can run to the Vault and auction it off" or "I'm sending you money" are long gone. ;)

People lie. Stop being a victim!

And now, Meri, you see the true horror of the actions that men such as myself commit. Underlying scars that never fully heal. You have sacrificed a trust you once had, and in trade adopted a cynical suspicion that taints your every action and will forever bleakly color your relationships with others.

It is the griefer's enduring legacy to leave such marks on those they encounter. Please, don't get me wrong, m'lady. There are griefers that give the name a bad tone. Those with no talent, who are the hacks and bottom feeders of the group.

However, I consider myself a step up from those lowly men and women. I have class, and taste, m'lady. And occasionally, when I'm feeling ill or not quite myself, I even suffer a tinge of regret from time to time.

Still, I can't help but wish that you still had the innocence and trust that you once possessed. You lose a part of yourself when adopt a fear that everyone is going to betray you. That is a price rather too steep.

It makes you more like me, and for that people like myself cannot be forgiven. I would wish no one to lose the trust which is so instinctive in the human heart.

You have my sympathies.

I also agree with Meri. I do not like folks like Storyteller. Unfortunately, every aspect of society is full of these kind of people, in game and in real life. Many people who play Asheron's Call are very naive and get taken advantage of by the Storytellers of Dereth.

It bugs me to say this, but in a way the Storytellers are providing a useful service for the naive or uneducated. The lessons the victims learn here in Dereth at the hands of Storyteller are very inexpensive. Hopefully, the victims will grow, learn and carry these lessons into real life. I agree Yula. Good show. The lessons taught here will benefit people, but at what cost to who they once were? As I've said before when your trust is shattered, you never regain it back, except in broken, hastily-glued together pieces that never look quite right again.

And besides, you forget one very monumental thing. There are no 'storytellers' in Dereth. There is only one, and he is trapped on the world of Wintersebb. I am no common griefer, but the ruler of them all.

I ask that you give me at least a little respect, as it is cordially due. After all, it takes alot of work to become the worst villain in history.

I provide a service. I give people someone to hate, someone to fight, someone to stand against. What good is a world of heroes with no evil to combat? I give people a villain they can see, feel, interact with. Not the hollow villainy of Gaerlan, or the Olthoi Queen. No, I give them an evil that exists along side them, and grows as they do.

There is nothing to regret in losing naivety, dear Storyteller. It is a part of maturing, after all. What I have gained more than makes up for what I've lost.

I've learned who I can really put my trust in.

I've learned what limits to place on my own generousity.

I have learned that there is no sin to continue to help others... but family (including my extended family that is in-game) always comes first.
Don't concern youself about your "legacy" either... at least not on my behalf. You, and others of your kind did not teach me these things... friends and "so-called" friends did. You, and other griefers, have left no impression in my life because you can't touch me. Only people that I care about are able to do that. And, truthfully, I just don't care about you or others like you.

Well... that's not quite true. I do pity you somewhat. If your greatest accomplishment is attempting to make others miserable... that's pretty sad. :( But, then again, that's your problem and not mine. I just don't care enough to feel bad for you for long. ;)

*takes Yula's truffle and daintily nibbles at it before shoving it in his mouth and getting the look of blissful satisfaction.*

Hrrrmmmmph....Mmmm....cholatey...mmmphm...you will be spared my wrath...mmmmphhh..*gulp*

Actually, I thinking that I'm growing bored with the whole Asheron's Call game. Not many people left on my world anymore, and I don't expect a huge influx of players anytime soon.

I've pretty much retired my griefing ways, Yula. :( I think I've gone soft in my old age. The other day I talked someone into giving me their armor to display their trust in me, and then I returned it to them. I just don't feel the overwhelming desire to be a bad guy anymore.

It used to be fun, but I guess we all mature as we get older. Say, you wouldn't happen to have another truffle by chance would you? I'd settle for a chocolate covered carrot if one is handy. Anyways, it's just not the old days. Not anymore. I always wanted to be the biggest, best, baddest and most famous man on my world, and when it happened...now what? Now there is nothing left to shoot for.

I think I may very well write a separate post which will be my last legacy really. In case you are interested, you can read a story about me in the legends and lore section. It might give you a different opinion of who I am, and I think you might enjoy it. http://forums.ac.turbinegames.com/showthread.php?t=24656&page=1

But that is not the post which I am referring to. What I'm thinking of writing is an all inclusive guide on griefer tactics, to educate people on how to avoid them. After all, I am the foremost authority on the subject, and I've done things that would surprise you, and gotten away with it. I could write a guide on all my tactics, to help people avoid falling into such traps in the future.

I think with the server populations declining at such a rapid rate, that it would be too little too late. But I suppose if I could help someone else avoid the sadness that I've caused others, perhaps it would be a worthwhile change of pace.

Are you going to finish that carrot?

Yes I know. Real Truffles are very desirable and expensive. They are running what $350 a pound? in France these days. More of course in the United States. All depending on what kind of Truffle and where you buy it.

No doubt that is the reason that this family chocolate confections has 'Truffle" in their name. By now there is a probably a chocolate truffle with real Truffle pieces in it made by someone.

I have died a lot and have never lost a plat scarab - ever.

Why not have someone you are playing with recover for you - or get help to go with you to recover your body?

Death items are your friend if you want to protect your *ahem* 400+ armor.

Paragon of Storytelling Funny, one of Storytellers biggest jobs was Paragon... or at least he took credit for it.

Well again I find myself posting because I feel the need. I try to stay off the boards but someone always says something that I have to say something about. SO, Storyteller I did love the stories you had told us all on the boards but did not care for the actions you decided were necessary for you to enjoy playing AC. Causing other “GRIEF” as you call it is nothing more than the bully on the block boosting his ego and picking of anyone he thinks he can. I personally think you should be banned from every playing any of your character’s on that account as well as being banned from posting on the boards. If you need to boost your ego do it somewhere else. It defiantly sounds like you are lost somewhere between reality and the game. When posting in the boards I think it is safe to be out of character. I guess maybe you need that for your own self needs but for the rest of us I think we can do without. As for the original poster it also sounds like something you would do. Another name and log in to boost you ego. I think people have identified the problem with someone losing plats. My opinion but again I would like to point out I think this is another game you feel you need to play with the people here looking to help others. I would like to offer you this. For everyone you cause “GRIEF” you will find that there are far more people out there willing to help. Even when you do the things you do and think it is fun you only cheat yourself. The rest of us are enjoying playing the game. If you would like to continue to do the things you do then I would suggest playing on Darktide where it is more like the world you seem to like to play. I guess I have said my piece and will again go back to the silence I enjoy and play my game. I hope everyone else can enjoy the game as much as I do.

No Ilumini should not be banned even though he stripped my friends account but it was fun chasing him and his followers through Ayan.

There will always be players like StoryTeller just like there will always be people in real life like StoryTeller.

I have been playing since the game came out of beta and have never been taken advantage of. You simply have to use your head.

Death items : Gold is cheap. I made them by the hundreds to protect my good stuff. So what if someone took the stuff? I had a whole mule full of more of it.

Find expensive, low weight things like crowns, jewelery, shoes, daggers etc... and add gold to them. It's easy. You just have to make sure they are more expensive than your most expensive piece of armor or weapon, shield etc...

I tend to play with people I know in game. But even if I ask someone to get my corpse and they should keep the stuff I figure oh well. Because if I had someone else do it that meant I could not get to it anyway and would have still lost the stuff.

That said, I recovered someones stuff in the matron cave a long time ago and kept bumping it on the VN boards until I got the things to him. Nice death items - but I am not a thief . Not in game and not in real life.

Showing your armor:

You can put it in a trade window for them to view you do not have to give it to them. If you are wanting it tinked don't expect a low level toon to be able to do it with success. Look around and see who does most of the tinking and ask them.

Your Account Information:

If you were meant to give it out Turbine would publish it for everyone to see. Most accounts are not hacked - it just sounds better than having to say, "I am stupid and gave out my information to a shmuck." It happens all the time.

Some players will pretend to be your friend just to nail you.

PAY ATTENTION

As much as players like Story Teller enjoy having a bad reputation, the majority of the players prefer to be known as good players who don't have to steal to get ahead or enjoy the game.

If you just look around and pay attention to what players can do what - I write them down- then you will know right away who is to be trusted and who is not.

It really is simple. :)

Years ago, AC had lots of greifers. There was no secure trade, you couldn't trust anymore. I kind of enjoyed it. I didn't greif myself.. But whenever I knew someone was trying to con me, I'd purposely screw with them for fun.
I'd do things like say, oh yea ill pass first, np.. but sorry my mule is at xx.x xx.x (which happens to be like a 25 click run)

Nowadays on the server I played on there aren't really many greifers.. I just go ahead and trust everyone and anyone for corpses and tinkering. Im rich enough that a loss wouldnt bother me much, and wouldn't mind a guy like storyteller on my server.

I did some greifing the ACTD preview for fun tho. Shortly after I noticed a thread about me with some 100 replies hehe.

Any time there is an influx of new players the griefers come crawling out of the woodwork.

Remember the VN List of Thieves? It used to be huge!!!

Or the griefers that would steal from everyone then re-roll the toon - like no one would figure out who they were the minute they started typing? Everyone has their own style - certan words that set them apart. It never took long to figure out who they were.

No one likes being taken - but griefers are a big part of the game. They add an element of excitement to the game.
