View Full Version : after playing a few hours i have more questions;]
I am liking this game so far, did not talk to anyone, however i did see a few people and chat was busy. My newbie questions are as follows:
1. is there a loot all button anyplace?
2. i made a female sho swashbuckler, will this be a decent class and what other skills should i get?
3what items that newbies find, are worth money to experienced players?
for example in ao, cushions which only lowbies could get was worth about 500k to older players.
4. Can you still buy houses in this game, and how much do they cost.?(likes to plan ahead)
5, the chat font is very small with my resolution i am running is there anyway to increase it without making resolution bigger?
I was pleasantly surprised with this game so far. Thanks for any help you can give me.

No there is not.

Depends on what skills you have now, your playstyle, etc. Try to make friends with people in game to help show you the ropes. I suggest you try not to let them power level you until you know the basics. :)

Slim to none and slim has left town. Salvage is about the only thing.

Yes you can. You need to be level 20 or higher to purchase an apartment or a cottage and you need to be level 35 or higher to purchase a villa. However, don't expect to find a villa, I'd say that they are all owned on all servers. To find out where cottages are type - /house available - and you will receive a list of cottages with coords. In order to buy a cottage you'll need a Writ of Refuge, Money and a trophy item. For an apartment you need a Writ and money.
5, the chat font is very small with my resolution i am running is there anyway to increase it without making resolution bigger?
Not really. :(

This may add to your queries, but, there is a 3rd party proggie that AC has allowed to be run in game. It is called Decal and it has some features with it like "autoloot". They are working out the rest of the problems/features so it works properly with TOD, but for now, you will have to just loot everything yourself. And welcome to the land of total addiction. :D :D :D :D

Don't use decal until much later in the game, if ever. It's not necessary and will lag your client.

Only lags your client if you don't have a decent graphics/Motherboard.....I have never had any lag issues while I used it. :D :DYa, but it's also dubious. The simple fact is isn't regarded as a cheat by turbine is the only reason I don't regard it as such (unlike som eother antis). I played with it for years and then one day I was like, screw this, it's a waste of my time to load it.

For right now Swamp stones have some value to high levels since they seem to need it to goto the new island. As a new character I suggest you get gold letters and get them stamped till you have a full suit of explorer gear. This stuff can last you till near level 30 before you find upgrades. Also the healer shops now sell heal, stam and mana potions that can get you through fights. swashbucklers get item magic to start to remember to use it and buy scrolls from the magic shop when you can.

There are actually a lot of things in the game valuable to higher lvl players that you can find. There is a crafting process called tinkering, and in order to engage in it you need various substances as raw materials. You extract these substances from loot objects with a device called an Ust. The process is called salvaging. Anyone in game can show you how to get an Ust and use it easier than I can explain it here. Anyway, there are a number of substances that are quite rare and valuable, and you are quite likely to find them in your loot (depending on where you hunt).
The most valuable substances are Mahogany, Jet, Red Garnet, Black Garnet, Green Garnet, Sunstone, Imperial Topaz, Opal. There are many others that are valuable but less so. You can find out more about them by looking up "tinkering" on the "jackcat" website mentioned above. You should learn how to use an Ust and start saving these materials. You will have no trouble selling them to other players for way more than you would get by just selling them to a vendor. If you play on Solclaim I'd be happy to explain further, just send a tell to my char. name in signature.
Decal is a widely used program that many people feel is a great help to the game, and that some people feel is the ruination of the game. I myself am in the first group. You will undoubtedly meet many people with strong opinions on both sides of the issue.
Many of the things Decal can do are considered quite acceptable and legitimate by Turbine -- the owners and operators of AC -- and will not get you in any trouble with them at all. A few of the things that Decal CAN do are unacceptable and completely against Turbine's Code of Conduct, and can get you banned from the game if you are caught doing them.
I suggest you talk to a lot of people and learn what Decal does, and what the pro's and con's of using it are before you decide how you feel about it.

3what items that newbies find, are worth money to experienced players?
In this game there is nothing a experienced player cannot get that only a newbie can get - basically. BUT, there are some stuff that the experienced players need and that many are too lazy to spend time to search for. As what come to value, unfortunately players in this game doesn't set the value on items based on the time it takes to get them; which would be proper.
As a newbie you wont get rich by selling stuff to more experienced players, but some of the items you might want to save for others players or yourself are: Plants (for dyeing) and ALL "housing" items. Check
http://www.thejackcat.com/AC/Directory/Purchase.htm
There is also a load of other stuff that a "lazy" player might want from you, but as said: don't count on this as a way of getting rich. You might also concider you keep this stuff for yourself until you get "lazy" one day :D
As a new player, BEFORE YOU SELL OR GIVE ANYTHING be sure to double check its value in the game. There are always crooks trying to fool a new player. Ask on the trade channel chat what value can be, and dont settle with one answer. Compare.

Yes, you can get a house in game. They are Appartments, Cottages, Villas, Mansions. Appartements and Cottages are available in great amounts. Villas are very hard to get, and Mansions are for the allegiance Monarchs only. Prices range from a few hundred thousand to millions (see link above).

What world you play on? If happen to be on Wintersebb and have questions you'd like to ask ig, look for me. I'll be happy to answer anything I can.
Toons I'm usually on are Striderlonghanks, Striders Blade, Striders Bow or Gandalf da Grey. Can ya tell I'm a fan of Tolkiens work? :)

Strider beat me to it for help if you're on WE. He would be a great person to learn the game from.
In any case, you probably don't want to get too attached to your first toon (I know, I know, it may be hard to think that way  ). Look on that character as your guide to learning the game, particularly the combat system and later on the magic system.
After some time, you'll learn tactics to use, as well as what playstyle you like best, what type of monsters you like to fight, what type quests you like to do, etc. At that point you may decide that your first toon isn't set up quite the way you want, or you may want to try out being an archer or a mage. While there are opportunities to switch an existing character around, sometimes it's easier to just make a new one. There are ways to level up quickly so you can easily get back to where you were with the new character.
Also, whatever you decide to do, resist the urge to outfit yourself in uber gear from a patron and run around with full level 7 buffs to start off. You'll cheat yourself out of the experience to be gained from struggling with "normal" gear for your level. By all means, accept help if you need it. But what fun/challenge is there if you have absolutely no chance of death and can kill everything in one shot? Later on, if you want to level quickly, you'll certainly be able to. But if you don't learn smart combat tactics early on, you'll be no better off later. I see high level people all the time that never really learned the game and can barely handle content aimed at players 50 levels below them. Besides, there's a ton of content and quests for younger toons. If you level up to 50 in a day you'll miss out on doing it when it's a challenge.
Happy hunting, and welcome to Dereth!

No MT luv? :(
If you ever switch to MT, look me up, I am in dire need of an apprentice. Anyways, useful tips... here are a couple websites you should add to your favorites if you haven't already:
http://www.thejackcat.com
http://www.acvault.com
they have lots of useful information, and AC Vault can direct you to people on your server via thier server boards.
Tip #1 Just play play play... sooner or later your gonna wanna experiment with different types of templates, and in doing so, will gain the ultimate knowledge in the Art of Character Building. Many of us old timers spent almost 2 years finding the perfect template through trial and error... and many of us have deleted and created more toons then dereth has monsters. hehe So just keep on playing and expereimenting.
and if you ever find anyone playing from hawaii.. give em' my usename and tell them to PM me... i've only met one other person that lives in hawaii :(
