I went out and bought AC:ToD last night. As soon as I logged on, I remembered how many hours I would spend playing this game with friends... so many good memories! (Too bad they don't play anymore.)
Anyways, It's been a good 4-5 years since I've played and a lot of stuff has changed. Needless to say, I'm pretty lost right now as to what to do. I've created my charater and started in Holtburg--a familiar town, or so I thought.
So far, a lot of information I've found on AC is extremely outdated. My main issue is having to start over at level one. I'd much rather use a program such as InstaOg (which doesn't work now and I've yet to find a replacement... especially since Decal isn't running yet, apparently) to bump my level up instead of starting off from scratch. (I'd be bored out of my mind, no doubt.)
Here's what I started off with (stats are adjusted after I distributed my points from the Academy:
Race: Viamontian
Level: 5
Trained------
Arcane Lore (38)
Creature Enchantment (57)
Item Enchantment (62)
Life Magic (57)
War Magic (57)
Mana Con (40)
I'm hoping to do well with that, but the big issue I am having is where to hunt and gain xp. I'm completely lost in that aspect!
Since you know the basic aspects of the game, perhaps you'd like to read my guide, located at www.paladinsofasheron.com/ac/gyes_guide.htm
It's pretty thorough so hopefully you'll find what you're looking for.

If I recall correctly, Insta Og would run overnight for a few nights and get you to lvl 26, or whatever lvl it took for an OG mage to be able to train war. It is no longer of any great use for 2 reasons (at least).
First, you can now spec and unspec skills during the life of your character, not just at the start. So there is no real need to start a mage without War spec'ed and you can hunt from lvl 1.
Second, with buffs from a friend (or one of the free bots in Holt) you can easily get to lvl 30 in one day. With a halfway generous patron you can be to lvl 50 before Insta OG would have gotten you to 26.
If you play on Solclaim feel free to @tell me on the char. in my signature with any questions you have.
Welcome to the new Dereth :D

Thanks to you both for your help. I read the guide and it did help a lot.
As for the InstaOg thing, yeah, I've read how much has changed and how useless such a program is now. I'm just so lost, I don't even know where stuff is anymore. (I remember when Arwic was THE PLACE to be. lmao)
There is a buff bot in Holt, but my problem is... where to go once I get buffed? Should I just go to that dungeon by the river down the hill from Holt (I can never remember the name of that place)? I guess I'll try that.
And yes, I do play on Solclaim! If you get a tell from Lidocaine, it's me!
Glad the guide helped.
You're right - lots of things have moved around. A lot of the portals have been moved and most people congregate at their mansions. Holtburg is probably the most populated town on Solclaim because of the buff bots, followed by Ayan Baqar and Candeth Keep (both of which you are too low a level to visit just yet).
Where to hunt? The biggest bang for your buck is probably Aphus Lassel - Tusker Island. As the name suggests, it's absolutely filled with Tuskers. The problem is that there are no lifestones there and the only way to get there is via a dungeon or portal gem ( you get a recall spell on an 80+ quest). If you like, look me up on SC and I'll give you a stack of portal gems. If you'd rather not kill tuskers, you might want to try the newbie quests in the starter towns. Those will push you through the low levels quickly.

Something about starter questions makes me frustrated. I don't know why...
But I got on for a little while and bought all my level I and II Arc spells and a few Item Ench. spells (like Impen and whatnot). For some odd reason, there were no buff bots in Holt, so I didn't really do much of anything before I got off.
As for hunting those Tuskers, especially since there is no lifestone there or nearby, would I fair well? I mean, well enough to make it worth it?
Any spells you think I should have that I don't yet?

Hi Lidocaine,
Welcome back. I just came back myself from a couple years off. I have found the Sanamar starter quests to be a lot of fun and will level you pretty quickly (actually all the starter quests have been updated for better exp rewards). Alphus Lassael, aka Tusker Isle, has a bunch of tusker dungeons for varying levels, for newbies on up to very high level characters. In addition to killing the tuskers, you can collect tusks and turn those in for experience. There are olthoi dungeons on Marae Lassel that are essentially the same thing, although somewhat less mage friendly. You may be able to create fellow with some melee players, which can really up your exp in a hurry.

Thank you all so much! I'll probably get on for a little bit tonight just to piss around... but probably Friday, I'll be on most of the night getting reaquainted with everything.

Lidocaine, I took my new mage to the area north of sanamar yesterday. Go and see Seneschal Dalmour and he will give you a small quest. The critters he has you fighting are terrific newbie mage food and give some good exp. This assumes you have ToD of course.

there are a lot of people on, though no as many during the night hours when i play.
the thing to remember, is low levels dont stay low level for very long, without having someone else who started a character the same time as you did, you wont find many people to hunt with.
try the /clfg channel and look for someone.
they added global chat channels which some people abuse, but they do help if someone is looking and doesn't want to spam.
take your time. have some fun.
