What restrictions do apply to free trial accounts?
(Not beyond level x, no vassals, no housing, or maybe no restrictions at all?)

none but you get billed right after the end of the trial so basically you got 14 less free days as if you would just buy the game for 12,99$ with 30 free days

I'm hearing rumors that people are building rank chains with them too.

If so, and Turbine allows this, this will be the biggest bonehead move EVER on their part.

It is all rumors because the free trial has been launched yet. Turbine has not explained any of the details yet.
