I've been getting this errer for some time now. This is a brand new install of the trial version, first time playing. I get past the "Connecting", hang at "Updating", then get the error message. Any fix for this, or it simply an internal error server side that I have to wait out? Any help is appreciated, thank you :)

First try what Yula has been saying:
Go to My Documents/Asheron's Call and delete the UserPreferences file.

If that doesn't help then it could be a firewall issue. Make sure acclient.exe and aclauncher.exe are able to connect to the internet and try again.

Well, I've tried any and all suggestions I could find, from here and other forums as well. All to no avail :( I'm not sure where the problem lies, but it seems to me that a game should not be this difficult to get working... certainly not a Free Trial at the very least ;) Thanks for the help, I'll give it one more try later on, but after that I think I'll be moving on. Have fun :)

Are you playing through a router? SOme routers are not AC friendly and that could be your problem.

Also, make sure the game ports are open.

One more thing to look at, If you use Win XP it has it's own firewall. Most other firewalls will disable it - not all do. So make sure that fire wall is either disabled or you have added permissions to it too.

By the way, it could look like launcher and client are enabled and might not be. Go into your firewall and remove both ACclient and AClauncher and add them back in and give them permission.

I have to do that after every patch.

If your using a router, please post the Brand and Model and I can probably get it working for you. Also what kind of internet do you have, and with what company?

I believe this should help (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Draytek/Vigor2600WE/Asheron's_Call.htm) with openning the ports for a Draytek Vigor router.

I am having the same problem/ I have deleted the user preference file plus deleted and then added back the exe files needed to have full access to my firewall. Mty router is Netgear-WGR614NA. Any help would be appreciated. Also, by openning a gameport-what exactly is that and what port is it/.

Same problem here. I used to play back when it was first released (My first mmorpg ever). And i remember some similar problems but it was never a big issue for me back then.

I tried the user file and stuff and the programs are allowed entry to the internett.

I got a Thompson Speedtouch 546i v6

Any help is appreciated. I was thinking of returning to the game of my "birth" full time but i cant do that if it doesnt even run :P

Oh and all the isntructions should be in "old-man" I aint good with all the technical stuff :P

Hey all! i'm back after 3 years and wondering if i should give this game another bash. One small problem, i just can't get on

Same problem as those above with both firewall turned off and AC apps set to trusted all i get is' The connection to the server has been lost'. I get through the first blue coil on the left but stall at the second and then get said error.

My router is a Netopia cayman 3346 if that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :o

no help? AC2 had the same problems, many that left wanted to come back when Turbine added a free trail for existing accounts. Very few could get through the maze of rejoining and there were many, many dissapointed posts on almost every ac2 site i visited.

Please dont let the same happen here as returning players are an important part of the lore

I am having the same issues as most, connection bar fills, update bar does not fill and connection to server is lost. I have port forwaded all the correct ports, turned all firewall protection off, updated the ini file and to no avail, im stuck. I am using a NETGEAR wireless router and a cable modem, i look at the logs and I can see the connections in the router. I have reinstalled AC twice still nothing, is there something I am missing?

I am not a newbie at networking and this problem stumps me. I have programs like xfire(Farcry) that uses the same ports, and I have no problems connecting (also uses NAT) so I not I can get through my router. I am coming back to AC after 2 years of absence and was really looking orward to getting back into the game.

Tech support really needs to resolve this issue, it should not be this difficult to get back into game.

As with everyone else, I get the same issue.

I am behind a DMZ, but I forwarded all ports just to be cautious.

Windows Firewall is not on, nor any other protection software.

I don't get it. Something so simple should not be so hard.

I play hundreds of other games, with no such issues, and now this.

Makes me cry

Well I finally got my system up and running, I forgot to set my static IP, see ya all in game, If you have a netgear router, remeber to to have the 9000 - 9013 range completley covered, I had to set multiple port forwading setups to make this work, also remeber to power up and down your router, it seems the settings wont take effect unless you do that

AC seems to be an elitist game where only networking proficient ppl can play  . I dont have a chance in hell of being able to do that and even with instruction i dont want to mess up the network here. Ah well! Now how do you cancel your free trial if you cannot get on?

I feel the same way. I am waiting 3 more days, and if nothing resolves from this issue, then I am cancelling as well.

I am on my trial and cannot even access the game. There is no way I am going to pay to sit on these forums and have a problem which no other game has cost me money.

To me, this makes no sense at all. I don't see why AC should have such issues, yet no other game to date that I have played has.

The timer has started Turbine, any ideas?

I couldn't find an edit button, so I decided to double post =X

I have spent the last 2 hours uninstalling every piece of protection software on my PC.

I tried, it didn't work.

I then decided to go to the PortForwarding website, in hopes it might be something stupid I have done.

I spent the rest of my 2 hours setting up my PC to be on a Static IP, and setting up each port like designated on the PortFowarding website, which you, Turbine, so graciously said had the answer.

No, it did not work.

It seems that the problem is stemming from an internal issue, not a personal issue on our parts.

I have scoured the web for every possible fix, spent hours of time trying every fix I could find, with no avail.

Maybe you could give us SOME kind of an upate, so we stop wasting our lives trying to fix something that is unfixable from our side?

Thanks.

EDIT: This is awkward... it's letting me edit this post, but not my previous one... anyways.

I agree TheEvilOne, I have four other MMORPGs installed right now and not a single one of them has given me this kind of problem.

But you know, it's not the fact that we have this problem that is bothering me.

It's the fact that the only fixes we have coming to us are from players.

Obiously we are not the only ones with such problems. You would think a representative from Turbine would at least speak up to say "We think this might be the problem, and we are trying to fix it." or "We really don't know what is going on, please bear with us."

Silence doesn't win hearts.

DSL modems are often more than a modem. They can be modems, routers, firewalls and VOIP adapters all in one unit.

Did you make sure to allow both the client and the launcher access to internet with your firewall?

If you sure you have that done right and your PC is directly connected to AC. Plus you do not have a telephone hooked to your modem (VOIP). Then your problem has to be one of the following:

1) Your modem needs to be configured because it has an internal router or firewall blocking AC's access to the internet.

2) Your ISP does not provide the networking protocol that AC needs to you. You have to have NAT. Many DSL ISPs use NAPT to reduce their costs. This may be:
a) configurable on your end.
b) may require your ISP's help to configure from NAPT to NAT. Some ISPs will do it for you at no charge.

Others will tell you that it is an enhanced feature - You have to upgrade your service and pay more money.

Some will not do it at all. In this case, your only choice is to change ISPs.

I keep loosing connection when I attempt to update.
I have given modem, firewall, etc. access to AC.

I'm not sure about what all the details that you mention means, but I have never had this problem while logging in to other multiplayer games.

I don't really know what to do about it.

Can anyone give me advice?

It's real sad to see what turbine are doing to our game. my wife and i have both been loyal to AC for 7 years damn its how we both met one anouther but we are not blind. Vista has ruined our game but you cant tell me the same trial package you used to get DDO and LOTRO to work was different to the one sent for AC. We have multipal accounts and 3 computers but the 2 new comps we got to make our game better just do not work. Turbine appear to be turning there backs on the people that have been paying ( or at least helping to pay ) thier wages for some time. Is this the same way that AC2 went, or are we just being too mad at you Turbine. I do know that if we have to go searching for anouther game to play it will not be a Turbine game. Please Please Please wake up to whats happening to you unless this is how you see the demise of AC. Yes we are real MAD and yes not the only ones, our friends on the game say the same thing, do us all a favour and get some kind of fix for the game or you do have to suffer any backlash from your lack of enthusiasm towards your loyal customers. i doubt your problem is related to any decal plugins, since you are just starting, but i noticed when I had Fog enabled in Decal, I got this same symptom

ever since this weeks patch Fog hasnt worked and would result in "connection to the server has been lost" errors when enabled

LOL, well that was a quick 15 minutes.
I DL the game, make my account and try to log in only to be met with continual :connection to server lost" messages. I come here and find I'm most certainly not alone, and the only recommendation to fix it is to fiddle with firewalls and router ports.
Sorry, but when you're the only game in town that can't seem to avoid this level of retardation, it's not a good sign. I'm guessing I might be in the running for the "shortest time subscribed to AC" award.

I have a linksys wireless G router, and I'm trying to play from my laptop. I have ports 9000 to 9013 forwarded to my laptops private IP (192.168.1.102), I've tried deleting that file in My Documents/Asheron's Call, and I have no virus scan software. I also have XP Service Pack 1, so I don't have the firewall that automatically blocks everything.

Why is it that I can play WoW with no problems whatsoever, but this game's like rocket science to setup?

First, I am a complete computer dummy.... I have only one wish, I want to play this game so I can be with my friends (I am returning after a year and back then I had never these problems)....

Okay, as far I understand it, in the picture below can be seen that I allow my computer access through the ports needed (correct me if I am wrong). I changed my computer by the guide on www.forwardport.com to a static IP (and believe me, I was scared to hell things would no work afterwards anymore.... but luckily all still works.....)

The port settings for the game:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~morwen65/Images/Asherons%20Call/AC%20ports.jpg

I tried to lanch AC without firewall (Zonealarm turned off and a friend helped me to check if the Windows firewall was on. It wasn't). I turned off my anti-virus software. I turned off my anti-spyware software.... (and someone is going to kill me when she hears this).

But still after the connecting tube, I was back to the "The connection to the server has been lost error".

I use a Speedtouch 546-modem. I have been told this is a very common modem. Not special or strange here.

About NAP/NAPT/NIP/NOP/whatever thingy (and I really don't want to know what it is) is the issue, then it is time that Turbine starts to support what is common.
None of the other games I played recently... as Everquest II, Lineage II, Ultima Online (a old game as well), Second Life, Guild Wars.... gave this kind of problems. With these games I just did run the setup, allowed access through the firewall and that was all. Why can't AC not the same?

I am a sales woman, not a computer expert....I just want to play this game, but it looks like I cannot :(

Morwen.

Yula_the_Mighty
03-21-2007, 06:24 PM
Yeah I know Alcatel modems - Speedtouches are common. AC has problems with DSL and a number of the DSL modems. From some of the other posters with speed touch equipment (not the same kind as yours) the reconfiguration is complicated. It is not something that a network novice can do on their own.

Your best bet is to connect to Turbine technical support via live chat. See if they can walk you through the port forwarding, NAPT to NAT conversion (if required) and the other configuration steps.

AC has problems with DSL and a number of the DSL modems.

You say that the problem is my DSL connection…

How about the next idea… I have in my computer a old fashioned 56K analog modem. In the time I switched from cable to ADSL I connected by dail-up to play Lineage II (so I guess it will be enough to play AC as well). Whatever account you have with my provider, dail-up is always available for you.

So if I would disconnect my ADSL connection, then dail-up to my provider and start AC…. Would that work? Then I have at least a temporary solution. All I need to do get a piece a telephone-cable from my computer to the telephone-line again, but that will be no real problem.

From there I can work to getting AC to work with the ADSL-modem. It might be a bit hard to get fast in contact with live help, because I assume they are available on US times and I am an European.

I have DSL too. Oh well looks like I won't be able to check the game out and re-activate my 3 beta accounts!

Would have loved to play my lvl 169 mage on HG and see if any of the old old pre-2005 loot I have on my 15 characters is any valueable!

Glad I signed up for the 15 day trial and didn't reactivate one of my accounts, atleast Turbine didn't steal any money from me!

Would have been NICE of Turbine to put in some kind of "if you have DSL" disclaimer but DDO sucks too, no wonder they can't compete with Blizzard in the MMORPG market!

indeed i have also had this problem, i just want to play AC again but nothing seems to work.

i am using a Siemens Speedstream 4200.

i have:
- set port forwarding
- turned off all firewalls (windows/norton/router)
- deleted the file found in my docs
- rebooted the router.

from reading posts above i am concluding that the only possible fix is to change from NAPT to NAT? but i have no idea how this is done or if it is safe or feasible.

i can connect just i lose connection on update...

if anyone can help in anyway i'd be greatly appreciative.

Please see this thread about NAPT to NAT for a 4200.

http://forums.ac.turbinegames.com/showthread.php?t=33723
As to how safe it is. It should be fine. Worse case, your ISP does not support NAT. You would just have to configure back to NAPT.

Ok I found a solution
go to the AC launcher
click Maintain My Account
right under the green bar is a link to cancel subscription
click it
confirm it and submit
then fill in the exit survey

Wile this will not get you connected to the game It will allow you to go to any other game where they want to support their product so that they have a job

Thanks ******** for reminding me how frustrating trying to use your product is.

I just spent DAYS on this with ATT. I have Roadrunner through Time Warner at home and there was no need for any port-forwarding or anything, it just works!

I want to have AC working on my store's PC and this is through ATT DSL, same router too Linksys WRT54GS and the thing was holding me up at the Update Progress bar.

Well sure enough I called and called ATT telling them it HAS to be something on their end or the way this modem works et cetera. They kept telling me it was my problem since they don't offer support for the game, I told them NO your Internet is blocking the game.

Finally today after about 2 weeks of work making sure both routers are configured the same way I got it working. I was told that the DSL connection for this modem needs to be changed from PPP to Bridge in the modem and then you need to access your router and change the DHCP to PPPoE and enter in your ATT DSL (LOGIN) and (PASSWORD)

Steps:

1) Turn off all 3 items, Modem, Router, PC

2) Connect the ATT DSL Modem to the PC but bypass the Router at this time. Wait 20 seconds and turn on in this order: Modem > Router > PC wait till all lights are basically steady not flashing and all green too, basically no red lights red = bad =D

3) Once on go to the ATT DSL IP which should be 192.168.1.254 then go to the Advanced Setting: Change it from PPP to Bridge and save the settings. Minimize the window, open a new window to make sure the internet is still working. If it is, close the new window and return to the Modem one. If not start step 1 over.

4) Now connect the Modem to the Router and the Router to the PC. Change to the Router IP which should be (192.168.1.1) mine in this case is 192.168.2.1 it can vary dpending on network. In the Basic Setup change from Dynamic DHCP to PPPoE and enter in your ATT DSL (LOGIN) and (PASSWORD) here, also make sure that the Keep Alive is checked. Save Changes.

NOTE: I DIDNT NEED TO OPEN ANY PORTS OR EDIT THE INI

That's it. I opened up AC and the Progress Bar started its magic!!!!!

Only took 2 weeks for me to get the proper Tech Guy to tell me the modem needed to be put in Bridge mode.

Oh well, I was looking forward to playing AC again, for old times' sake, having played for about three years around launch, but I'm getting the same problem - game connects but doesn't update.

AC is supposed to be a game, it's supposed to be fun, it's supposed to be something I enjoy devoting my leisure time to.

I'm not about to devote potentially hours of my time to trying to fix a problem which, in 2008, should not exist. Every other MMO I've played has worked out of the box, without me having to delve into router settings, including AC the first time around. If other companies can manage it, and Turbine can't, then it looks like the other companies are more deserving of my subscription. As far as I am concerned, if a game doesn't work out of the box, it doesn't work.

Dreamkeeper
06-24-2008, 07:47 PM
Well, I was hoping to come back to AC, but I've just spent the last 3 hours trying to get a connection. I've never had a connection problem with any other game. I setup my firewall, turned OFF my firewall, setup port forwarding, turned off the SPI firewall on the router... still nothing. I'm taking the "Cancel Subscription" route. Obviously, AC is not one of Turbine's priorities. Sad.

I sit here and read over and over the same issue that I was having back in the day when broadband hit the market for the average consumer and cable internet / ADSL was delivered to home. This was when the monthly fee was under 10 bucks. I had couple of subscriptions to AC when Microsoft still owned it and I had setup a home network just to run multiple accounts. I even had purchased AC2 after beta testing ended and what a ruckus that was.
One thing I would like to add is how much people trash Microsoft but by golly they had their chit together when they still owned AC. Turbine was the maker so in reality nothing should have changed.

WTF happened you asked? It’s actually what hasn’t happened.
What a shame.

I promise everyone here I will never purchase another product created, associated or even the word “Turbine” mentioned.

Looks like alot of upset people, this was a chance for many to return but ended in the opposite. I was lucky to load right up into the game no problem each time, although I too had game issues when it first launched.

Unfortunately not everyones router or switch or dsl provider works exactly as the next and some patience and probably much needed Troubleshooting will be needed to be done.

I dunno how things are elsewhere in the world, but Bell Sympatico up here in the wild canadian north has a firewall/virus/spam block service provided right with your DSL line.. if your ISP provides such a service you want to turn it off as it will slow your connection down and even further if your already using firewalls, virii scanners and spam blockers on your machines.

So to re-iterate various steps.

1) turn off any ISP provided scanning/blocking services.

2) turn off Windows Firewall

3) turn off any Internet security based products

4) turn off Virus scanners

5) ensure ports 9000 - 9013 are forwarded on your router (set to Both (udp and tcp)I can't remember which but setting it to both should not have an adverse affect)
-in regards to number 5) (if you are using DHCP addressing on your router, ensure your pc is still getting the IP address as you have setup in the Port Forwarding section. If you have multiple pc's on your network, you may find the Ports are forwarding to the wrong machine.

6) ensure your drivers on graphic card is up to date.

7) ensure your using at least Directx9

I think that covers it all... Hope it helps some of you out.

I've been getting this errer for some time now. This is a brand new install of the trial version, first time playing. I get past the "Connecting", hang at "Updating", then get the error message. Any fix for this, or it simply an internal error server side that I have to wait out? Any help is appreciated, thank you :)

Same thing here and i read the whole thread but since i play at work and the server is in a locked room and password protected i dont see how i can change anything on it.

funny thing is i can play everyother game so far here. AOC, horizons, EVE, LOTR, funny but isnt LOTR a turbine game??

Well - I'm having the same problem - I just installed the free trial and want to connect to Frostfell and it doesn't appear to want to connect. Exactly the same thing as all the other people have described.

I use Time Warner and I play WOW, LOTRO, EQ, EQ2 just fine - not willing to fiddle with .ini files and ever other thing under the sun and potentially mess up all my other games. I don't think this is a problem on our end - the game should connect to a server and start patching immediately - but it's just timing out.

Any help would be appreciated. Going to give this a couple days and than I'll cancel before I get charged.

Well after being an AC customer for years and recent coming back and subscribing two accounts, its nice to see that I can't even get onto the game. My connection bar fills but it hangs on the update bar and gives me the 'server connection terminated' message. It does this from behind as well as in front of my router - so its not a port issue (i've opened all the ports and set a DMZ also)

Nice to see turbine support in here too. </sarcasm>

Seems I am not alone. Did everything I could to reconfigure. I had my ISP give me a public IP address (no good) My router is opened. Ports are forwarded. Windows Firewall is OFF.
What makes me wonder is, this morning. I was able to connect for 30 secs with an old character, then link light went red and it gave me the connection to server is lost. SEVERAL other MMORPGs have not been an issue, but it seems AC (which I played for years) now doesn't want to connect.
Turbine it also appears has not responded to ANY of the posts for two years on the forums about this topic. Nor have they responded to my e-mails to tech support.

So if anyone has managed to get this working correctly with a Belkin F5D7230-4 router and Allied Telesis as their ISP, please let me now how.

I will be cancelling my recently reactivated account.

This error happened to me too.

This is how I finally got AC to start updating.

Port Forwarding seems to do the trick. You have to configure your router. My router is a LinkSys WCG200 and I have comcast for ISP.

So - here's the hard part... connecting to your router. I don't know if this works with all routers, but it's worth a shot. Open up your web browser. Type in - http://192.168.0.1/ This is probly the same address for most at-home DSL and Cable routers. You might also try http://192.168.1.1/

Anyway, http://192.168.0.1/ connected me to my router, and then it asked for a login and password. The default Comcast login credentials are - login: comcast, password: 1234.

Great, so now if that worked you're looking at your routers little webpage. Now you have to go to SETUP, or Feature Setup, or whatever. Then you go into Port Configuration. Make sure you're editing the Port Forwarding ports, and not the Port Blocking.

It will ask you for the application name. This is a weird part here. I mean, techincally the application is called AClauncher.exe, right? Well, that didn't work for me. It gave me the Illegal Application String error, or something. So I found an application name that it liked - AshCall.

So try using AshCall as the application name. Then set your Port range from 9000 - 9013. You want this port range to work with both TCP and UDP ( there should be an option for BOTH). Now you have to enter in your computer's IP address. If you don't know your computers IP address you need to go to Start, Run, then type Command. Hit enter, and you get the black DOS screen. Type in ipconfig, and hit enter. There! You now know your IP address.

Make sure to check enable after you enter in all this stuff.

Now click apply, and it should update your router! Now AC will update.

So yeah, I just did all this and it worked for me, and it's still updating as I type this. I hope that the game runs ok. I'll keep checking back here.

Later.

just like CzarZero says...

for me i did another step.

i have a D-Link WBR-2310 Router.
Go to "Advanced" Tab --> then go to "Advanced Network" Tab
Look for "Gaming Mode" Section and make sure the check is on "Enable Gaming Mode"

it started updating for me right after that.

Funny, I've played this game for 7 yrs on a lousy dial up connection. After extensive talks with the folks at HughesNet, we decided to get satellite. We're connected to their newest satellite, and I have to admit ... scooting around on the Web is a blast, BUT ...

We have an HN9000 Modem, with a D-Link DIR-625 wireless N router, and all 3 computers have a wireless adaptor on them (also D-Link). Hubby can play his game (EQ2) without any issues. I have the dreaded "update vial won't fill in" problem :(

I spent time on the phone with the folks at HughesNet (was very surprised to reach them at 3am PDT!!) to find out that they do not block any ports ... so on I went to the folks at D-Link (another surprise, got hold of THEM at 3:30am PDT), and after extensive checks and configuration changes, it's not the router either. Heck, the tech guy from D-Link even went through my port forwarding to make sure it was right, AND helped me create a rule to ensure that those AC ports would be easily available (even though I'd told him HughesNet does not block ports).

Turbine Tech people need to address this NOW. There used to be a hefty thread here with different routers etc, that would/would not work with AC. The point is, there should not be all these router/configuration problems NOT WORKING with this game. I have suffered far too long on dialup to be shot down by something this simple. I know plenty of other people who play on wireless, AND on satellite, so I know it is not an issue there. I've sent an email to the Tech folks, and I plan to CALL them on Monday - forget this chat nonsense. This has been going on since ToD release - and it is WAY past time that Turbine addresses and fixes it. At the very least, make a workaround if it is a coding problem somewhere - give us a "patch" to download that becomes a permanent part of our AC directory. But at least DO SOMETHING!

I honestly hope that they don't try to give me the old "it's their problem not ours" routine ... because I'm ticked enough at this point to tell them, "fine, I'm making it your problem, because when I cancel my subs, quite a few others from my allegiance will be right behind me..." I truly have no desire to do that, but I refuse to hook up dialup again and have to be disappointed when I have this lovely system here that I've waited so long to get ...

C'mon Turbine ... help us please!!!

Same problem, game disconnects with message "Your connection to the server has been lost" or something like that when trying to update. Was on AT&T DSL. Port forwarding, deleting files, checking software firewall on my PC and the firewall on my router: nothing worked. Someone posted a complicated fix for AT&T DSL earlier in this thread, however it was too much effort and potential risk. I logged onto my neighbors' Wi-Fi and now the game updates.

Still could not play the game due to other issues, see my last post.

Finally, I got Asheron's Call working on my AT&T ATT DSL connection by doing the following:

In my DSL Modem's settings I set two options:

Connection Type: Smart Keep Alive
Let LAN device share Internet address?: Yes, use public IP address

I'm pretty sure the 2nd option is what got AC working on my DSL connection. For reference, the DSL modem I use is a Motorola 2210.

Good luck out there, ya'll.

I get booted every single night between midnight and 2am. (this is prime time playtime for me!)

But I think this issue rests solely on my ISP as I get dropped from any game at least once during these hours!

Frustrating for sure when trying to put up a trade bot when I'm away for multiple days.

Hey i decided to come back to asherons after a long, long time.
and im having the same problem. But...as i type this im at 16% for the patch.
Nervous that it will disconnect me again.
i dont use a router, not using vista, everything is port forwarded using a static ip(cable).
i hope it goes all the way through because i saw someone say it dropped them at 32%.
i'll repost when i find out. :D

left it on overnight. came back on this morning. i think it downloaded the 56,000kb one.
cause now i started AC and its patching a different size file, 23,000kb

Alright so, i got disconnected again, but it seems that whatever percentage you were at when you got disconnected, it doesn't reset the entire patch, it actually picks up where it left off when you try again, so i guess im just gonna have some paitience because i miss playing so much, just wish i remembered my old account info :(

Edit: so i got the patch, but now i cant stay logged in for more than 5 minutes at a time, is it the servers?

I'm still having the same issues, as well. I have the Thompson Speedtouch STS585 v6 with Blackfoot DSL. Blackfoot uses DHCP. I've asked them if they provide static IP's and they do, for a fee. However, there is nothing needed to reconfigure the modem if I choose to do so. Even though I don't have to reconfigure my modem, "could" changing to a static IP resolve this issue?

Downloaded the trial version
Win XP
Ports are forwarded via http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Thomson-Alcatel/SpeedTouch585/Asherons_Call.htm
No Anitvirus installed
Both AC files are okay'd in Windows Firewall (even though it's turned off)
Tried uninstalling/reinstalling
I've even tried standing on my head and holding out my left arm.

Any and all advice would be GREATLY appreicated.

Thanks, all.

I have a similar problem, but there's a variation:

I managed to download/apply the patches through the client (second squiggly bar) after an hour of downloading last night. Then I made a character and was ready to enter the game world. All I get is the game GUI, but a black screen and an eventual disconnect (no packets being received, so it's the 40 second disconnect thing at work).

I've tried the basic steps -- disabling my AVG Anti-Virus, Windows XP Firewall, and so on. But that hasn't worked (nor has tooling with the User Preferences .ini file so far, either).

The thing is, I'm not connecting through a router. I'm plugged into a Ruckus MM2211 wireless modem that picks up a signal from the municipal wireless internet system I'm a part of. So there's no router to deal with at all, meaning the PortForward site isn't of any use.

Anyone have a tip or two? I contacted tech support but don't expect an answer, based on some of what I've read here.

I'd really like to get back into this game, but if I can't, well, forget it. Still, I don't want to give up this quickly.

Thanks.

As an update to my previous post above:

I opened ports 9000-9013 and managed to appear in the game world. Deciding to switch my character around before getting in too deep, I made a new char and lo and behold -- I can't log in again! The ports are still open but I'm still not able to connect once the GUI appears. Ridiculous.

Hi Laird, could you please let me know how you opened the ports? I've seen a load of instructions for specific modems or ISP's but nobody actually listing "this is how you open ports 9000-9013...."

Anyone in the UK managed to get AC to work with the following spec:

No AV software
XP operating system
BT Home Hub router

Actions I've taken so far:

Given acclient.exe and aclauncher.exe exceptions at the Windows firewall
Forwarded my ports to 9000-9013 and 2900-2913
Made sure my userpreferences.ini port reference is 9000
Cussed the computer a lot

Any help and advice on anything that might help would be greatly appreciated - I want to start playing again!

I opened all my the relevant ports. 9000-9013 and I can connect to the update server fine. I just can't get past a black screen when I log in. Nothing but the GUI loads. Eventually it disconnects me with some lame error message.

I've been having the same issues as everyone else but i FINALLY got it working with an ATT DSL modem and a Belkin F5D8236-4 router...hopefully this helps everyone with different router brands. I didn't have to do anything to the modem other than bridge it which I had to do once I got a new router. If you are unsure how to do it or can't find a guide then your ISP should be able to talk you through it very quickly. It's not hard with direction. Anyways, most of this is done in the router settings with the exception of setting up a static IP address which is instructed at portforward.com

1.) Access your routers settings as instructed on portforward.com
2.) Follow instructions on portforward.com to open ports (including setting up a static IP.)
3.) In your routers settings, make sure your account information is entered (if needed) and find PPPoE Internet WAN options (or something of that nature.)
4.) Set your PPPoE IP address to the same address as your computer..your IP address can be obtained in command prompt by typing /ipconfig as indicated on portforward.com
5.) Ensure you have ports 9000-9013 open labeled as "AshCall1-14" for each individual port and that they are set for TCP/UDP. This means Port 9000 = "AshCall1." Port 9001 = "AshCall2." and so on.
6.) Find your DMZ which might be under your firewall settings.
7.) The DMZ feature allows you to specify one computer on your network to be placed outside of the NAT firewall. This may be necessary if the NAT feature is causing problems with games. Use this feature on a temporary basis if possible. The computer in the DMZ is not protected from hacker attacks and all that crap so I'm not sure if it'd be wise to spend oodles and oodles of time on AC with this feature active.
8.) Your DMZ static IP should already be set. If it's not then you may have to get that information from your ISP. Your NAT is linked to your DMZ settings. So if you don't see DMZ settings check your NAT settings. You should be able to set up a private IP in either DMZ or NAT settings. Set up a Private IP to be set outside the NAT settings and make sure the Private IP is the same as your computer IP. Again...by doing this your computer is outside your routers built in firewall protection.

That should be it. It took me 6 hours to get this working so I may have missed something. If there's any questions I'll try to help.

After I was done I was able to access the interent on every computer on the network still and I did not have to shut off my routers firewall to get the game to work. I know not all routers are the same in regards to settings and options and what not but hopefully this gives some of you some idea's on how to change your routers settings a bit and get it to work.

Forgive the bad engrish!!11

Thanks for that Duffman, glad you could get back on.

I've tried pretty much everything that people have suggested here and on a few other sites - but I draw the line at using the DMZ option unfortunately. Having had other game accounts hacked there's no way i want to open my PC up even more, so I guess AC is well and truly a dead option for me now.

Shame as it was easily the best MMORPG that I've played to date. I don't expect Turbine to convert the existing server setup to a more modern approach as it's probably not financially viable for them.

Have fun all of you on there!

Another returning player here who can't get this to work :(

Sad really, there I was fed up of all the cookie-cutter mmos out there and nostalgia struck for the fun of AC. AC has the best loot and crafting systems and, along with AO, one of the best skill systems in a game of this genre. Exploring Dereth was a wonderful and mysterious experience, without the tedious linear garbage every new game has, with your adventures dictated by which zone the certain type of 20 bears an npc told you to kill is in. But none of that means a thing when I can't get past the loading screen.

My advice to Turbine is get AC3 made, forget copying WoW like you did with Lotro. Give us AC reborn, with modern graphics, some new combat options (stuns, melee aoes, dual wielding, ranged volleys, crowd control etc), a UI with many of the features that we used Decal for and enough server side control to avoid the cm issue. Add these things to the great game you made all those years ago and avoid locking them all in to a rigid class structure with preset skill levels like so many mmos have. You could even replay some of the old AC storylines, with a few twists and bigger challenges thrown in to freshen it up. And, of course, make sure we can actually access the game world in the first place.
