Hey guys,
I am stuck on the screen with two blue progress bars just after the client loads. I have no problem with the connecting progress bar but it will not update the program :( i.e. the first blue bar fills up but the second one remains empty until i get a 'Timed out from Server' message.
I am NOT on a network and am connecting to the internet via a ADSL modem. I've tried all the suggestions I've seen listed on this forum such as disabling my windows firewall, changing and deleting the userpreferences file with no success.
Any information on how i can get past this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Yours truly,
Jupiter.

Your modem is probably a combined firewall, router and modem. You will need to forward the ports. In addition, a lot of ADSL provider uses NATP. If so you will have to change ti to NAT (if allowed).
This site explains how to setup the port forwarding:
http://www.portforward.com/
Note: you need to forward 9000-9013. So of the pages only forward parts of that range. Forward the whole range.

How do I change from NAPT to NAT? My networking knowledge is somewhat limited and as such I do not even know what these two acronyms stand for. If my ISP determines which one I am using, how can I at home change this?

The first thing you should do is go to the linked web site for port forwarding and follow the configuration instructions for your equipment. Did you do that? and did it work?
If it did not work then you might need to read further down. It is unfortunate that your a novice when it comes to home networking. Most likely this will be a good learning exercise for you.
When you get to home networking and configuring elements there are thousands of different models of the hardware. Each model has its own unique way of being configured. This leads to a double layer of confusion:
1) I am lost. I do not have a clue as to what is home networking is. Or what might be wrong. Or what needs to be fixed. Yula is spewing technobabble. When trys to explain it. Yula uses new equally confusing technobabble. I am not going to spend much effort on teaching because this is a very complicated subject.
2) This is followed by how do I change my own network. This part like trying to program a unfamilar VCR to record a show. At least in the VCR case, you know the what and the why. It is only the how that is driving you crazy.
How do I change from NAPT to NAT?
You will have to research this. You should have received a user manual for your modem. If not, then examine the device for the manufacturer and model number. Look the manual up on the web.

Your ISP configures your hardware before sending it to you. In many cases, you can reconfigure from NAPT to NAT on your end. Read your manual.
You should also be able to figure out if you are using NAPT or NAT by logging into your modem and examining the settings. If not you can always call your ISP support and ask.
NAPT = Network Address Port Translation - AC can not work on a NAPT connection. Full stop
NAT = Network Address Translation
Many DSL providers (ISPs) use NAPT because it an inferior service that is a lot cheaper to offer to the customer than NAT. The ISP can share a public IP with a number of end users - like you. Public addresses cost money to buy. The second thing that they like about NATP is that it pretty much makes it impossible for the end user to operate any kind of server app that would generate steady traffic. That way they can charge you extra for a service upgrade to a business connection.
