The blueberries (Viamonts) do not have a racial weapon. Instead they get armor tinkering and speced loyalty.

Wow...thats sounds..... totally unnatractive....
I read a lot that Melee Defense is a must-have for the most part. Is Magic Defense very beneficial (non-pvp)?
A friend of mine and myself are going to play again, and I will probably be buffer/daggerOrStaff and he will probably be melee/meleeD/magicD (at least till lvl 50)
wanting to get him setup with the best melee template, and he really wants to be non-magic as much as possible (at least till lvl 50)

Also...
Is axe totally worthless? he may want to use that, so i want to know the viability of it
And...
How many spec points do you get at character creation?

Hallo Jeremy,
Welcome back !!!
An axe is a good melee weapon. You can discuss if Sword or UA is better, but axe is not a bad choice. A big plus is you can use a hammer for blud attacks.
Because many mobs are melee orientated, it is a good to have melee def. trained even for a mage. Melee chars should spec it. Spec magic def. has not much use at lower levels. They will hit you with war anyway.
At creation you have 330 skill points. A nice starting template for a melee (axer) is 100/30/100/50/40/10. These numbers can be altered later when you progress in game.
I hope you and your friend will have much fun in game !!!!!!

You start with 50 skill credits. You get more as your character grows. The spec limit is 64 credits.
IMHO - Your choices are UA or sword. UA is free for Sho. Sword is the highest DOT for a melee weapon. When turbine introduced the high end weapons (wield 325, 350, 370 and 400), they expanded the difference in the damage between Axe and Sword. So much so that many of my axe friends switched to swords.
Swords are a lot easier to find. There are more quest swords. The loot-o-matic generates a lot of swords. One advantage of axes is that not a lot of demand for loot axes. So if you can get people to look for them you can get really good axes. There are still folks that really like axe. Try and see. The temples allow you to change skills if you do not like how it is going.
Warin never lacks for great atlatls. There are not a lot of throwers on HG. It is a sucky weapon. Warin uses an atlatl for two reasons:
1) Just to be wierd and different.
2) My daughter hates atlatls and their animations. She keeps talking about breaking Warin's sticks. Warin is always tickling her characters with his 'stick'. It has become a family joke.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice!
Can I get input on spears/staffs? Im not sure if they are 2handed or not or if this affects the decision as to if they are viable.

You start with 50 points. You can spec all of them. You can spec the next 14 that you get as your character grows. Hopefully this is clearly than my previous post.
There are no two handed melee weapons. So you always have a melee weapon and a shield (if you so desire). There is no dual wielding either.
All missile weapons and magic casters are two-handed.

one last question....
i know dagger is slash/pierce, but is pierce when you attack with speed or when you attack with force (sorry if that makes no sense, im talkin about the attack slider bar)

Dagger and sword both have pierce / slash weapons. You set the power bar to 1/3 or less and you pierce. Anything higher and you slash. Just look at the animation and it is clear which damage type you are using.
There are some weapons that only do pierce damage. In which case the power bar does not matter. Mind goes blank. I do not think there are any pure slashers.
There is even a blunt sword. It does not do much damage. It a novelty joke weapon. I can not recall if there is an equivalent joke dagger or not.

From an axer's point of view, I'll have you know I get kills over sword/mage almost anyday. Things like Thunderchicken I wont because I get focused on a lot by the Chicken. Also, I have probably mostly max damage axes, still in the process to get all max axes. Also, in pvp axe does just fine. The only problem is that axe has one animation, so a sho axe man would be beneficial as you could utilize ua at higher lvls. Anyway, bludge owns.
A good template for axe is 100 str, 100 coord, 75 quick, 35 focus. Spec axe/ua (depends on which wep u wanna start with), melee d, and life magic. As you progress, you can fix accordingly, but doing this first allows much more leverage as you progress and eventually, self-buff.
With augments now, at levels 125+ you can grab a gem which later on will take any extra xp you have and give you a new skill. I highly suggest starting with the 500 mill augments. These are the cheapest augments and they increase an innate attribute by 5, for a total of 50 extra innate attribute points. This goes really well with focus, and spec magic d will take you to 304 base.

I think ima do a racial melee build. It wont be UA (yes i know UA is awesome) because my last character was a 97 UA'er and i wanna try something new.
What are yall's thoughts for staff vs dagger?
I will probably be....
SPEC
Creature
Staff or Dagger
Melee D
Run
TRAINED
Lockpick
Yes, i know its not the greatest and it has some flaws, but honestly, im not that worried about being the best, and I will probably only play till around lvl 70.
The build is so that I can explore and have fun (hence the run).
I may pick dagger because i want jacked up quickness and quick is part of the dagger calc. Tho if someone says staff is much better, i may likely choose staff instead.
I could use help with my starting stats for my build. So please reply with suggested starting stats, and please keep in mind i want my quickness jacked up.
Thanks =)
(and sorry for wanting to make a gimpy character lol)

For Dagger try something like 10/50/100/100/60/10
Spez Dagger, Melee
Train all your magics, get healing and even spez it when you got the credits. Might even want to spez life and magic d when you get enough credits.

I'd say 10/10/100/100/100/10. Once you get to the point where you're buffing yourself, you'll be glad you did.
