Hello,
I played AC years ago and was interested in the free trial to check it out again. Ive downloaded, patched and created a character, but when I portal in I get disconnected. I see the portal as the game loads up to the purple outline of my character, but that is as far as I get. Ive been searching the forums for help and saw the problem of just a black screen, so hopefully my problem is slightly different and easily fixable. **Edit** I tried connecting directly to DSL without router in equation and I got the same results :(. I have done the following so far;
Set up static IP forwarding 9000-9013 to my computer.
Deleted the user pref. file.
Turned off windows firewall.
Im running;
Windows XP sp2
Linksys wrt54g
DSL through Embark
Thanks for anymore suggestions.

We're in the same boat. Also played AC years ago and wanna try it out again for the nostalgia and such. :P However when I try to get in, it fills up the blue connection bar, then disconnects me at the update bar.
I have the same router and OS as you, though I am using a Cable Modem rather than DSL.
I have opened up port forwarding to 9000-9001, 9004-9005, and 9012-9013 as it says to on portforwarding.com or whatever, and I've also allowed the aclaunch.exe and acclient.exe in my firewall, but have also tried completely turning off my firewall, and even my Norton Antivirus, just in case that was being problematic for some reason.
Nothing works and I don't understand why I can't get in.

I guess you can't edit posts. However, I just finished updating my router's firmware, and deleted the userpreferences.ini in the Asheron's Call folder, and now the game is patching and all is good. :)

Ive patched fine, but once game loads I get disconnected. I did my router's firmware about 3 weeks ago, so I doubt there is a more recent one. Let me know if yours actually loads up and plays. Good luck!

It loads up fine and plays now. My only problem is I have no sound, but I saw a thread around here somewhere that may have something to say about that. Gonna go see what I can do.

Told you guys there is something up with the routers version lol but with the sound make sure in device manager (right click my computer, properties, under hardware tab) make sure your sound card drivers are installed and any third party sound programs arent conflicting. if ther is a yellow mark or x in device manager you should reinstall that driver. hope this helps somewhat..

Well mine still is not working. I just have my pc hooked right up to the modem right now to take the router out of the equation. Still the same problem so mine is not router related. Glad it works for others.

To one guy I asked him if he have directx and newest graphic drivers and he updated those and worked, your problem sounds different an might be page file paging to slow, its the last thing I know to sugest anyhow. If you or anyone pc has only 512mb or ram in the pc that is enough to run the o/s most likey and the rest gets paged to the hard drive witch is much slower for some without getting more ram and causes more delay, at this point you could try adding more ram or increasing the page file and hope it works abit better/faster. You could also try in the performance tab also try changing your scheduling to programs, programs could help too. This might or might not help the guy above me but im sure it could help someone.

It's a problem with your router. Are you running the latest firmware? I had the same exact problem with my Netgear WGT624v3. Nothing could fix it. I got rid of it and got a Belkin, now everything is fine.

It disconnects when im connected directly into the dsl modem, so it is not the router. I did try it with the router and an updated firmware, but that did not work either.
Ive been trying on two systems, one is an alienware rig with 1.5 gigs of ram that can more than handle the game. The other is a p4 with 2 gigs of ram. Bot get the same results.
I saw some posts discussing nat and natp? and am wondering if that is the problem. But I could not find a clear answer in the posts other than a suggestion to call my isp and/or im outta luck. Since I live on an island changing isps is not an option.
It is quite frustrating, ive got the game downloaded and im ready to pay you turbine. This game was one of my first mmorpg and still stands out in my memory as awesome. Thanks for the suggestions and listening to me whine some more...

I got it working and am still kinda shocked. I figured I would post a follow up in case others are in the same boat I was.
It turns out my dsl modem (ZyXel 660R from embarq) is also a router. Did not even think it was because there is only one port out the back. I configured it to forward the correct ac ports and still got nothing.. how frustrating.
I finally found a suggestion to put the modem/router in bridge mode. I do not know much about the specifics, but found some instructions and bam, right away it worked. I put it in bridge mode through my wireless router, so I am not losing the functionality with my wireless router. (the supposed incompatible wrt54g).
Maybe my struggle will help someone, see you in-game!

The wrt54g is compatiable and so is all the other linksys routers just they need updates to keep the sessions stable. It's a good thing you figured out your problem, it did sound like a router type problem at first.
