I saw this someplace recently but forget where.
At what level do you drop items from your pack, and at what level can you drop equipped gear? I know it changed sometime in the years since I last played ...

Hallo Brash,
You can always drop gear from your chars, unless the items are attuned or bonded (in most cases quests items).
Your starting gear outside the trainings hall is not bad. You can suvive the first 20 levels with it and possible longer. After this time you have to find better pieces, anyway gaer you will wear till about lvl 80. Then it becomes in place to equipe yourself with realy good stuff.
Hope this will be a bit of a guide for you.

Thank you very much =) Turbine did a terrific job assisting me to find my old accounts and get them migrated over, so I am currently checking out how to best proceed with some older characters that gave away all possessions before leaving the game five years ago. One archer is level 101 and only has a green Singularity Bow, 40 AL Siraluun Dress and focus stone (about the only items that were actually attuned to her)
Various sites list an "Ultimate Singularity Bow". According to Maggies and ACVault, there is a Singularity (blue, destroyed on Death), a Bound (purple, not destroyed on death) and a Green (Ultimate)
Jordana's singularity bow is green and very very very sparkly but it is certainly not any of the above. I remember (vaguely) doing the quest where you had to exchange it before dying, and it is now attuned & bonded. But it is not the Purple Bound one as it doesn't have Virindi slayer, Crushing Blow, Biting Strike. And it is definately not the "Ultimate" despite being green. The one she has now is green, attuned/bonded, 110%/+10%MD and BDVI. The name on it is simply "Singularity Bow".
So I assume they changed the quests but not clear to me is what I need to do, to "upgrade" it (hopefully I don't have to do it all over from scratch). And if it was directly upgradeable to the Ultimate, would this be a decent fill-in bow to use while I look into other options, I like it being non-droppable on death and not requiring lore or death items, as long as it doesn't just truly suck compared to other options. The quest looks almost doe-able solo in mediocre gear, hmm except that if I need to redo the middle Bound version of the quest, it requires lockpick...
Does anyone know how to get the "old green version" switched to the "new green version"?

Greetings Brash!! :)
One correction on the guide listed by Yula: You drop one item for every 20 levels (ToD) instead of 10 levels.

Thanks very much, that page was a huge help. I do have a question.
Because I usually play vry low strength archers, I always used to carry 20K portal gems in the old days and they always worked very well as long as I carried large numbers. I was thus delighted to find out the portal gems now stack, and had loaded up on about 75 of them (3 stacks of 25). According to the linked page it sounded like that should easily cover me ok if most of my gear is in the 2k-7k range, as even the "devalued" ones would now be 10k. However when I died at one point, one of the things I dropped was a 5K Elari Bow.
I guess my question is, did "stacking" the gems hurt me somehow? It still took mostly gems, including several from the same stack. Or did the Elari bow somehow fall victim to one of those "random factor" calculations that get tossed in to make things less predictable?
If you have a stack of portal gems, or any item, only one item in the stack qualifies on a given death. So 10 stacks of 2 gems would allow you to drop 10 on each death gems over 2 deaths. 3 stacks of 5 means you'll drop 3 gems each death over 5 deaths.

Great thanks, I will break up the stacks and spread them out.

when you're bigger, or if the portal gems don't work so well, buy some mana charges such as the titan and the massive. You can buy them now from master mages, like the one near Mayoi (Shoyanen's 63.4S, 85.9E). They don't stack, they're light and expensive so they make decent DIs.
