View Full Version : Returning too.. RP group ?
I played for a couple years right after AC went retail, so I'm guessing anyone I knew is long gone.. Kinda miffed that "Neco" is not available on any server I've tried, but I settled for tacking his last name on instead..
I know that most of the servers seem to have about even populaces, but I'm interested in finding a group of people who are into roleplaying and all that. One of my main attractions is discouragement of out of character speech (/tells are OK by me) and things like that. Just a good group of folks to hang out with, ask questions, or just sit and talk with for a while.
I will probably be playing mostly in the evening hours, though sometimes I may be around in the daytime. Hopefully I'll pick up liking the game again and stick around if I can find the right place to fit in.
Also I respect the idea of allegiances and stuff, but I'm not the type to just join up right away or anything like that, if any groups don't mind that.

Earlier in the year, I attempted to reform the Role Playing Society of Wintersebb, yet despite my efforts, we were unable to maintain a stable community, simply due to the lack of people involved, as it was merely a few of us.
I'd be willing to give it another shot, if people show interest.

Hallo Neco,
Welcome back !!!!
It will be hard to find a real roleplaying group. One of the problems is the game is not realy designed for it, but ok with some effort you can reach far.
Solclaim is known about its mature playerbase and the monarchies tends to socialize, anyway some of them. So if you wish there is most of the time someone to talk with.
Whatever you decide, I hope you will have much fun in game.
Well I can understand that.. It seems no matter what game I play RP groups tend to fizzle out or RP servers are just sparsely populated. GemStone III is about the only game I've ever felt comfortable RP wise, since it's pretty much a semi-enforced atmosphere... But I digress
I did make my new guy on Solclaim, though I guess just seeing some of the odd ball names (I'm guessing they pass for normal here) kind of jarred me out of the whole idea of trying to RP at the time.
Any tips on what town I should hang around, or who I might approach in game? Even if there are no real groups, just hanging out with one or two like minded people gets the job done anyway.
My full name is Neco Darkan if anyone feels like contacting me when I'm on.
On a side note, it will be nice to head up into some of the mountains eventually and watch the sun come up and stuff.. I used to do that a lot, but now that the graphics are improved and I run everything on maximum I bet it will look even better.

RP'ers are spread out across all servers. There are probably very few full time roleplayers left. There are probably more people that do have at least some back story for their characters and would roleplay if spoken to in character. And I'd guess a good chunk of the white world players have no back story for characters, but would go along with RPing during live events and such.
Your best bet might be to make a character on all the worlds. when you enter type /join roleplay to enter the RP global channel (only need to do once per character) then use /crp to talk on the roleplay channel. Just say hello or something, see what responses you get. Try at various times of the day and week across all servers.
I play on LC. I have 2 characters that are always in character. The rest of my characters all have a back story and I could roleplay them if I wanted to, but the opportunity rarely rises.

I suggest you join on WE. I become the new Ilumini on July 10th, and all hell will break loose for the carebears.
I've spent some time on both Solclaim and Wintersebb though haven't witnessed much talking amongst the players at all. Haven't even bumped into anyone except for the first day I was back I think it was, two guys in the same dungeon and not a word.. I guess coulda been bots or something? Anyhow...
If anyone wants to host some kind of get together or social gathering it would be pretty neat.. Makes it a bit easier to make friends I feel. I suppose it doesn't matter who the host is really, as long as people are interested in showing up and chatting for a little bit or something like that.

Gemstone III !!!!! Loved that game!!!!!!
If you are in Solclaim look me up as Sister of Son!
Or I also play MT in the William the Bat Monarchy, as Sho Is Sassy
I dunno... I have kind of gotten used to Wintersebb.. I remember a time where the only server I ever played on was Leafcull, heh.. That's where I started, too bad my characters there are gone for whatever reason.. It has been years though..
But right now I am starting to feel comfortable.. Haven't met anyone in particular but I hope to.. I bought a blank book and I am going to keep a diary of Neco's adventures and maybe some folks will buy it and get a good read, heh..

Shall we set up a time to meet in-game?
If you want to sure.
I can be available the easiest in the late afternoon / into the evening.
I was going to set up a rp group myself with characters based loosely on AD&D characters. Unfortunately, rl has gotten rather hectic and I haven't had the time to start this up.
I also play on WE in The Haven (Paloma II). If a rp group does get started give me a shout in game or pm me here on the boards. My in game name is Clav (among quite a few other alts :p).
I've pretty much made Wintersebb my new home it looks like.
I've started on a mapping project, hopefully it will turn out pretty neat.

You should make a thread with what you write about in the journal. It would be good I bet because there hasn't been an adventure column in a good long while that was based on someone RPing. I would definetely read it.
Not quite sure what forum that belongs in? I am guessing the Lore section ?
I was planning to add a subdomain to my web site (shameless plug (http://www.oldskoolgames.com))for the purpose of posting stuff on my maps & possibly my journal entries.. But I also want to have my journal available in-game for people to read... I'm sure making copies will be a ***** once I get past 10 pages or so.... heh.
Anyway since you're interested. Here is what I have written so far...
It is about 3 pages long in-game. I haven't written a conversion chart to keep on paper yet, so the Time & Dates are not in-game.. There are also a few OOC referances such as "experience" and "level" and a couple other things I believe... I haven't had the time to find suitable IC terms to use for what these things do.
But I also am facing a dilemma, there are some pretty good, thorough maps on www.acmaps.com - I'm not sure if I want to bother trying to compete with something like that either.. Plus my style would be totally different.. On the level of maps like the ones for GemStone at http://www.tsoran.com/, I have all his maps printed out actually.. It's great that he designed them that way.

========================
Righht now I am in Shoushi, I just arrived a few days ago. This place is like a ghost town, I wonder where everyone went? I am currently on a quest to recover some items for two local residents. Apparently Mosswarts like to steal them over and over, so why don't these people buy a chest and lock it? Chests are pretty heavy, too heavy for any Mosswart I think.
They seem like nice enough people though, so I will help them. They have pretty bland names though; Lou Ka and Bai Den. I have recovered seven items so far, but the final one eludes me. It is a necklace; I swear I have been over every inch of that dungeon, but I must go back again... I don't like it there, such a stinky rotten place.
Anyway, I have entered the Braid Mansion Ruins now and will have to proceed level by level until I can find the necklace. Unfortunately I have a poor memory when it comes to mapping things out wherever I go.
I can probably pick up some extra items as well and get a few extra rewards for my work. In fact I may take this opportunity to actually map out the dungeon on all it's levels to help other people who adventure in this area. At first I found the mazes to be really confusing, but then I realized they aren't mazes at all.
The first level has shown thus far, that it is simply a hexagonal pattern of linked rooms that all head in the general Easterward direction. There is one room that branches off to the South near the end, and that contains a family of Shreth.
The second level seems to be a mirror of the first design, and I suspect that the entire dungeon may pan out this way, save possibly the final deep level. But as of now I have recovered the necklace I seek and am becoming dangerously encumbered; I shall head to the surface and then continue on my mission to map these strange ruins.
10:38pm -
I turned in quite a few things and made a few thousands pyreals, as well as earned another level. I had a lot of experience saved up, so I boosted my strength a lot so I could spend more time on location as I map and pick up items. It doesn't hurt that it helps my melee strength as well - a dead cartographer is a useless one after all.
I will also start keeping time with my entries, as well as dates. Well, back to mapping and adventuring the ruins...
11:04pm - 7/11/2007
The Braid Mansion Ruins are now officially mapped. I believe I have covered everything in the dungeon. Now the hard part begins; I must render professional maps with information that I must now extrapolate from all my data. This includes what items are located where, what monsters are on what level, and what their general vicinities are, as well as their strength rating.

For dates and time in game:
Ignore the date and time given on map panel. That is based on the time of the days in game (2 hours or whatever). In that system, a whole portal year passes in 1 month real time. This is not the system of time Turbine uses for lore. They use real world time with isparian words for the months.
If I ever need to know the month name and portal year for a given date, I use CoD's monthly update pages which list the event name and the date it took place:
http://ac.warcry.com/index.php?content=lore/events/contents
http://ac.warcry.com/compendium/patch_tree/index.php?cat=0
Here is the Turbine page that explains the times of the day and month name:
http://ac.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=192
The only hard part about this writing the time of the day. Do you put down the actual time using Roulean terms? or put down the time of the day as it is given in the game? We can't just ignore the fact that several day cycles fit into one real time day. There is even a place in game that changes based on the time of the day in-game.
I would suggest leaving the time of day out. If you make more than one entry a day, just write entry 1, entry 2, etc.
As for writing the date, I don't know if there is any one accepted style. There are 12 months so the mm/dd/yy format could work, in which case you'd just adjust the year to portal years. I usually write Leafdawning 13, PY 18 or 13th of Leafdawning, PY 18 (today's date)

For in game terms such as leveling and skills:
it's again unclear exactly what you should do to talk about these.
There is a very very old article from the Zone that was about leveling:
http://ac.warcry.com/lore/texts/index.php?action=display&id=89
There are a few cases in-game where NPCs will say to you that you must be a certain level to do their quest. One that comes to mind is the Impious staff where the NPC says something along the lines of, "only those level 12 or higher may enter this dungeon." So it wouldn't be totally out of character to mention your level.
In writing, I'd try to be more vague about it. Something like, "I have reached the next level of power today" or "I was surrounded by those clouds of colors again, this must be the 50th time that's happened." or "The colors rose around me again. The common warriors here would equate my strength to level 50."
For attributes, I would not mention raising them with unspent exp. Instead talk about how, "I feel much more coordinated after fighting all those drudges" or "after some meditation, I've increased my willpower" things like that.
For skills, one thing I've always liked was saying skill levels were test results. I got this from another player a long time ago. He'd say he took the SAT (Standardized Alchemy Test) and got a 305. The basic idea can be applied to most skills. "I bet if I went back to the training academy, I'd score 250 with my sword skill." You can also talk about weapon skills in terms of weapon wield tiers. "I've become skilled enough with a sword to wield the first tier of more powerful weapons. (250)"
Good stuff.. Thanks
The months are definitely easy enough.. I don't see anything for the days though.. Also for years, like how does that first link come up with "PY 17" etc.. But time seems rather vague too.. I guess it simply deals with approximations since there is not a complete list of hours/minutes ?
