Why am I told to search the forum for reports from other players to see if my anti virus software is incompatible with AC?
Can the team test them and provide an official list? Are they working on this now?
What causes this issue so that some players need to delete their AV to run the game, and what can be/is being done about it?
Why do netgear routers have so many problems with the game? Is anything being done about this problem, which has existed for years?
Why is there no warning about them, or at least a recommendation to search the forums and investigate the reports of players as there is for AV software?
Has Turbine attempted to contact the developers of these products to collaborate on finding or fixing the problems? How is it going, or why not?

When will you fix this problem?
error 0x80041012
No, I am not going to downgrade to a second rate free fanboi antivirus. I have had Norton and McAff on my old machine (XP) and it worked great never an issue.
I got a new machine with Vista, McAff which I have to have for my job that pays me so I can buy my months of AC and I get this error no matter what I do.
I guess to cancel my account is my only option at this time as I will retire my old machine this 3 day weekend.
Thanks for the fun turbine, it amazes me that you dont care about your customer base.

> Why am I told to search the forum for reports from other players to see if my anti virus software is incompatible with AC?
Because it's a virtual lock that it's been tested and found to be incompatable by others.
> Can the team test them and provide an official list?
Could? Perhaps. Will? Unlikely. Too many configurations to matter and it only matters in Vista and the fact that it's been reported by the players is functional enough.

First read - http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/10/05/155347.aspx
It's all about the kernel. What is worse, is that both the AV folks and MS have valid points. The reason that the AV folks had unfettered access to the kernel also allowed everyone else unfettered access and MS decided that it might not be the best of things to allow so they stopped everyone. Supposedly SP1 is going to grant access to the kernel to "partners" which should make life easier for everyone involved.
But it's not all about the kernel when it comes to AC. Vista has another interesting feature that prevents programs from being changed and, on the whole, that is a good thing because most programs don't upgrade all that often. So Vista locks down everything in Program Files and other directories that require administrator priviliages to change. Again, on the whole, a good thing. But for AC which updates quite a few times in a year it can be problematic. Of course the solution is to move AC out of the protected folders as well as any other program that updates automatically and often.
SP1 also made some major improvements to Vista but since Comcast still hasn't made a 64 bit version of Mcafee available, or vice-versa, ain't no way for me to test it for you. Not that I would because AVG works, works well and is far less bloated than Mcafee and Norton as well as not being so intrusive. It runs and runs quietly.
> Why do netgear routers have so many problems with the game?
Because of the way AC handles net traffic and the way netgear handles it as well.
> Is anything being done about this problem, which has existed for years?
For AC to fix the problem it would require a fundamental rewrite of the network code for both client and server and that just isn't going to happen for reasons that I hope I don't have to explain. As to why netgear doesn't do it? My guess is that they don't see the ROI on it.
> Why is there no warning about them, or at least a recommendation to search the forums and investigate the reports of players as there is for AV software?
Because it's old and we don't get many new players complaining about it?
> Has Turbine attempted to contact the developers of these products to collaborate on finding or fixing the problems?
Probably not. The virus and protection issue can't be fixed by any interaction between AC and anyone else. The network code can't be fixed by Turbine and they really aren't able to get netgear to fix their problems. It's not that the problems aren't know it's just they aren't fixable by Turbine.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions JJC, very informative.

There was just another thread about netgears. There's another thread right now asking for a sticky of routers, saying another brand's model has similar problems.
A simple stickied thread suggesting players just search the forums for routers would take like one minute to make. It would have saved me 10 hours of messing with every setting possible to determine my old router would never work well, and saved the time, money, and possibly subscriptions of everyone else who has had a similar problem.
Come on karch, please? It's not even a problem for me any more, but if I was a new player I probably would have quit over it.

- I believe the problems only occur with those using Vista. Since they state they don't officially support Vista I would assume that covers it.
But yes they could state somewhere vista can run the game if you are willing to spend time configuring it etc.
