Character locks into fighting stance

Periodically, I have found that my character will lock into fighting stance and when I select high/medium/low I see the red progress bar slide right; but, nothing happens. When I click the shield (or press `) the character changes stance briefly then falls back into fight ready. I tend to see this if I click h/m/l and halt my attack. I have seen it at other times but this is repeatable. Usually I halt the attack either because there's a wall in the way or I realize I need to go a different direction than the beast is going.

I have broadband (DSL), Pentium IV, no Decal running.
