Being new to AC and having a similar issue, I checked this thread out and the only reply does not really help.
Having spent ages searching the forum for answers, the last thing I need is more seaching. Maybe a link would have been better and helpful!!

> Having spent ages searching the forum for answers ...
I find that hard to believe. Just putting in 0x80041008 provides you with any number of threads that have both the problem and solution to said issue.

I find it hard to believe that you really were thinking when you posted.
For someone that has not been on AC Forums in years, it does take time to search all the related threads and actually find an answer.
There are so many dead lead threads on that subject with no proper answer at the end. If you used the search feature you would find out for yourselve. That equals time.
And then one has to read all the posts of a thread because relevant information may be at the start, the middle or end. This also equals time.
If it was so easy, as you make it out to be, then it makes sense that people would have found all their answers by just searching and why even bother posting questions like this thread.... or maybe its more to do with the attitude of some here to newbies.
Ok, I have SPENT hours trying to read hell of a lot of threads to find a fix for the Nvidia 8800 issue. Maybe I an thick, but I cannot find such (apart from SW T&L).
So being such an expert, can you elevate yourselve and just this once be 'Magnanimous' and open that wonderful book of advise you have and tell me.

Ummmmm The Nvidia issue and the patching problem are two seperate issues ... try not to conflate them ... The patch problem is well documented both by users and by Turbine.
And FYI it's ADVICE ...

Ummmmm The Nvidia issue and the patching problem are two seperate issues ... try not to conflate them ... The patch problem is well documented both by users and by Turbine.
And FYI it's ADVICE ...
In return...Here is some advise or counsel.
The term 'conflate' is extremely well documented by most language institutions and in many reference books plus you can even look it up in your own thesaurus. Just because a word exists, it is not good behaviour to try and bend such a term out of context to such a degree. This practice leads to confusion and mis-understandings.
In the context of the post, at no point do I try to 'conflate' the two issues as one. A basic understanding of the English Language should help you see that and make you aware that no rules (unless yours) have been broken by mentioning two issues in the same post.
If mentioning those two issues in the same post is 'conflate' or coalesce/commingle/blend/fuse/merge or any other term one likes to use, them start pointing this out to a very many of the posts on this forum where someone assumes they have the liberty to post what they wish (within forum guidelines) or make reference to two matters at the same time against the feelings of a select few (which does not really seem to include Turbine). I will see you back here in a few weeks once you have posted on all those threads :)
Second point - When someone asks a question, they very likely are seeking an answer related to that question, not some bit of 'wise-crack' advise that does not progress in a postive manner. And quotes like 'The patch problem is well documented both by users and by Turbine.' does not really cut it.
It is logical that most people approach such issues in a similar manner on this forum or any forum.
1) Ask a question, when there is no answer then they resort to search.
2) Ask a question and search at the same time.
3) A few that come here and ask a question expecting someone else to do all the work.
I suspect in the real world that option #3 is a rare occansion. Clearly not enough for you to be under the pretense that we all must be in the third group I described. Actually that sounds more like an insulting way to treat people who come to this forum when all they asked for was help.
It is a sad reflection that in the normal 'real world' such a responce to a request for help would not be treated as such or tolerated and one can only assume that the anonymity of posting over the Internet enpowers certain people with an attitude that most likely would not be tolerated by others in their real life.
Either way it seems that you and your cohorts have little patience for the 'Newbies' depending on your mood at the time or maybe are just bored and have to post comments that do not really help in a resolution.
What is your intention if you are not even bothered to answer questions but you still find the need to post? fatherly advise!! .... suspect at the least.
It is quite clear what your motives were not, by posting here.
If you are going to post and guide your 'children' with your advise, could you at least try to offer help in answering the question/s and set an example of what a upstanding member of this forum should do. Maybe I can learn and change my ways :)
> For someone that has not been on AC Forums in years, it does take time to search all the related threads and actually find an answer.
It takes less time to hit the search feature, copy in the error code and find the answer than it takes to post and then wait for people to answer. Posting just takes less effort.
> There are so many dead lead threads on that subject with no proper answer at the end. If you used the search feature you would find out for yourselve. That equals time.
Not on this issue. What he wanted, and what you are demanding, is that other people do his work for him. To spoon feed him the answers. You are far better off, by any metric, knowing how to use a search feature than turning into Blanch DuBois.
> If it was so easy, as you make it out to be ...
Putting 0x80041008 into the forum seach funtions brings up any number of threads where the solution has been given time and time again. Putting it into google brings up the answer, as the first link, with some other non AC links. Putting AC and the error into google gives exactly the same thing.
> ... then it makes sense that people would have found all their answers by just searching and why even bother posting questions like this thread ...
No, people do it because they are either search engine illterates or just plain lazy. Experience has taught me it's the latter. They want the information given to then and any effort is just a foreign concept to them.
I did notice that you also did nothing to help the person and didn't even offer any help on how to find the solution. If I am wrong because I told him how to search for the answer rather than give him the answer, what does that say about you who didn't tell him how to search as well as not telling him the answer? It's not like you did anything to help his problem. I did. Both of his problems too. So rather than complain about people not helping perhaps you could actually help?
> In the context of the post, at no point do I try to 'conflate' the two issues as one.
You most certainly did. This thread is about the patching error. His problem has nothing to do with his videocard. I told him how to solve the specific issue he was having by searching for it. Does this mean that all issues can be solved by searching for it? Did I say that al problems could be solved by searching? No and no. By making it sound like I did you did try to pass off your problem as his. It's a textbook case of conflation.
> Second point - When someone asks a question, they very likely are seeking an answer related to that question, not some bit of 'wise-crack' advise that does not progress in a postive manner.
I told him what to search for. You complained and offered absolutely no help whatsoever. Where was your input that made this progress in a positive manner?
> If you are going to post and guide your 'children' with your advise, could you at least try to offer help in answering the question/s and set an example of what a upstanding member of this forum should do.

Ok, here we go again!!
> For someone that has not been on AC Forums in years, it does take time to search all the related threads and actually find an answer.

Depends on the issue at hand and a blanket approach such as yours do not always work.
Nope, If you even bothered to open your mind about the purpose and scope of a forum and how the majority of forums in the world are used, you would realize that your statement sinks right here.
So following your advise I get 'I had a similar error with a notebook running Windows Vista Business edition last week and after trying unsuccessfully to make it work, ended up formatting the hard drive and installing Vista Ultimate. That fixed it.'
Ah, so the solution is to format your hard drive!~!
That is the first solution offered in a locked thread on VN Boards that does not even clearly state the subject of the thread.
2nd solution offered - 'I had this problem too - had to uninstall (NOT just disable) Kaspersky AV software and then it was fine.'
Ehrrr, That does not really help as I do not use Kaspersky AV.
And so on and so on.
Only further research gave me a clear picture of what the issue was, but to be honest, I could have got a responce to a question on the forum in that time.
How do you think it starts to look for a Newbie, etc.
Example: Nividia 8800 graphics issue - Having searched both here and external for many hours does not provide a full solution except for the SW T&L fix which has issues. Oh, there are plenty of threads, posts and misleading advise but no real answer. I read the answer was over-heating and that is incorrect. So many experts out there you have to tread carefully sometimes for the answer.
On your example, the issue was from what I understand caused by anti-virius software (which I did not know at the time), not just any but maybe all or maybe under certain circumstances.
People preached that it was a number of different permutations involving anti-virius, firewalls, routers and I saw other un-related reasons given.
It still took time to read all of this, filter and process it and then experiment to see if the offered solutions worked for my particular software, setup, etc.
Oh, Just like you said...so easy in all cases, under all circumstances and for everyone that plays AC!!
> ... then it makes sense that people would have found all their answers by just searching and why even bother posting questions like this thread ...
No, people do it because they are either search engine illterates or just plain lazy. Experience has taught me it's the latter. They want the information given to then and any effort is just a foreign concept to them.
WOW!!! That statement just confirmed my assessment of you.
It kinda invalidates anything you say if you hold others in such poor regard.
Plus I still have no answer over the 8800 issue!!
What a waste of time.
Have a nice day.

I first came to the thread looking for an answer!!!!!!!!
I posted because I was offended by the second post , like yours did little to really help.
Ok, taking advise from you - All users of AC - To solve all your problem - Use the search feature of the forum and goggle - Use key words - The answers are there. Oh, and there is a really good chance that daylight will come tomorrow.
Great, I am now the most helpful person in the world, I have been able to help people solve all the permutations of possible problems. :)
So according to you, a person that can use a computer, install software, sign up for AC and create a account cannot work out how to do a basic search which was all you offered. Come on, that is so hollow.
What a waste of time.
Have a nice day.

Cannot understand why if there are so many threads on the anti-virius issue spread across the forum and the Internet according to you, why Turbine do not place the answer in a FAQ (or at least some clear directions to take to resolve) or sticky it to the top of this forum.
Seeing how many new people have the issue, one wonders what is going on.
Crazy, it seems so logical and good customer service.
> Depends on the issue at hand and a blanket approach such as yours do not always work.
There is a reason that google exists. Solutions, such as searching, work and for the issue at hand it works quite well. Considering that the person claimed to have been searching for it, and I don't know how someone could search for something this easy to find and not find it unless they were searching on the wrong thing, telling them what to search on is exactly the right course of actions. Of course the more obvious reason is that they haven't searched at all and just wanted someone to provide them the answer.
When you have a problem the first thing you should do is search for a solution. Odds are you aren't the first one to find it. The other part of the problem here, beyond the desire to be spoon fed the answer, is the belief that they are special. It happened to them so everyone else should stop what they are doing because it's the most important thing in the world.
> Nope, If you even bothered to open your mind about the purpose and scope of a forum and how the majority of forums in the world are used, you would realize that your statement sinks right here.
This disfunction goes back long before web based forums were all the rage. It's the reason that usenet groups created a FAQ and one might even say that it is the reason that FAQs exist. It is the height of self indulgant behavior to assume that forums exist soley for your problems and you don't have any responsibility to do the smallest bit of searching and that other forum members exist solely to provide you with a solution to your problem.
One of the rules of any forum is search first for exactly the reason I said. Odds are you aren't the first person to come across this problem. Odds are that it's been addressed as well it can be as well. If you want the answer fast, and odds are that you do, then you should search for it. He would have had his answer and been on his merry within minutes. Minutes. It could take days or hours or days for someone, usually me, to come and answer the question. Think about that for a minute, or an hour. If after 1 am I'm a bit surly telling someone to use the search funtion and give him the search code then perhaps it's a function of the lateness of the day. But I still did more than you did. I answered his question and gave him tips on how to search. That's a twofer.
> Ehrrr, That does not really help as I do not use Kaspersky AV.
What is 1 + 1? Guess what happens when you search for 0x80041008 and Kaspersky? Seriously, take some responsiblity for finding the solution to your problem and stop expecting things to be served to you on a platter.
> I first came to the thread looking for an answer
Then, perhaps, you should have followed the advice and searched.
> I posted because I was offended by the second post , like yours did little to really help.
The second post was from the original poster. The subtext of the second post was that he used search to find the solution.
> Cannot understand why if there are so many threads on the anti-virius issue spread across the forum and the Internet according to you ...
My theory is that people are essentially lazy and expect things to be served up on a silver platter, with the outcome being more threads than you can shake a stick at, and this leaves you befuddled as to my there are so many threads?
> ... why Turbine do not place the answer in a FAQ (or at least some clear directions to take to resolve) or sticky it to the top of this forum.
"- If you still cannot update, your Internet Security suite may not be compatible with AC. Some suites need to be configured, some need to be disabled, and some need to be removed for AC to function properly. Try searching for your particular suite to see what other players' results were with it."
They told you to search too.
This is the important fact you are ignoring. He claimed to search for it. Had he just asked I doubt I would have told him to search for it. But he claimed to search for it and couldn't find it. That is essentially impossible which is why I found it hard to believe while telling him what to use for a search word.

They did ... It's "stickied" as the very first post at the top page of the Technical Help Forum, and for what it's worth, your condescension is what started this whole exchange between JJC, you and I, sir. When people try to help you, you should not insult and demean them.
