I have heard that AC on the server side runs on Linux/Unix. I have Windows 98SE and refuse to line M$ pockets with the purchace of Windows XP. Since Turbine has basically has told M$ to go jump in a lake and repurchace the rights to AC is it possible that in the future we might see a Linux client. I applaude Turbine for having the guts to take control over AC and have the vision to fix what M$ was beginning to screw up.

Lunix client?
Last I checked it was perfectley feasibly to run AC on a linux system... might have required a false windows environment in it but still linux.
Im sure that it does not make much business sense to make and support separate Linux client. There simply are not enough Linux gamers (yet atleast).
Try running it with wine (or other win emulator).

I'd rather not use alternate methods to connect to the Zone to get in, just don't trust them. Once Zone is gone and we have a client based launcher (please hurry on this one Turbine :D ), then it could be feasible to use WINE. However, I would rather have a native client then an emulator. (I know some would say WINE=WINE Is Not an Emulator, but it is slower)

I have Win4Lin, apparently it is supposed to work well, but i can't try it out considering i have no older than win xp in my possession atm. That could be a much better option than WINE. I've used wine and it is definately like an Emulator and doesn't work 100% well.
This game is so integrated with virtual c ++ that it maybe a bit hard for them to convert it over.
But i'm sure there is a way to convert it all to plain C and then port it over to Linux.
But i'm with you i truly wished they would develope a Linux version of the Client. That would open up another 5000 or so subscribers i bet. considering it is a really great game and would fit very good on a Linux box.

AC does work in winex
It does work in winex!
You just cant play it on linux right now, unless you get MSIE 4.0+ working under winex..... good luck with that!
Once we get a dedicated launcher, and hopping it doesnt use any part of MSIE at all.. as long as it doesnt chances are you will get it to work under winex, and then let the AC Linux party begin.

AC can be played in Linux , using WINE - also IE can be successfully installed using Crossover. The setup for AC is a royal pain tho.

At one point in time MS owned and operated the servers and ran them from inside the MS Gaming Zone, their flagship gaming service at the time. You really think they would have allowed a Unix based system on a game they bankrolled during developement? I doubt they rewrote all the network coding during the time they bought out the game til they took over the servers.
> ... is it possible that in the future we might see a Linux client
Possible but unlikely. It would have to be shown that there is enough new demand from the unix world to play AC and to continue playing and supporting the coding of a different but functionally identical client.

Go down to about midpage and you have Ibn stating this :
We don't have any plans to do a Linux port (or Mac, for that matter) at any point in the near future.
While that was last January I doubt that the plans have changed.

I find your question humorous , considering that Hotmail was (and still is, afaik) owned by MS , yet is hosted on machine(s) running FreeBSD. Microsoft's own website , microsoft.com , was also hosted on FreeBSD , for years , though I believe that has now changed. I will agree with you that it still isn't likely to see a *nix based client in the future, however. :D
Hotmail was a product aquisition, not something they developed. I'm not familiar with the website / freeBSD thing but would wager that was a subcontractor and not an inhouse deal. MS wasn't a leading innovator in the web and may have contracted out in a hurry to get their massive foot in the door.
