View Full Version : Any ATI Radeon users having this issue with AC?

I realise this isn't quite on topic for this forum, for which I apologise, however short of cross posting it on Vn, I haven't got any other ideas of where to ask other ac players if they get this issue also:

In short, the problem is that I set my gamma (brightness) in the ati drivers panel, then I play ac and it's fine. I then go and play something else for a bit, such as far cry. Then I load up AC again, and my screen is very dark, gamma hasn't been applied to it.

I've had little to no help from ATi about this, and my last resort is to pay all the shipping costs to get my card replaced, but obviously I'd prefer not to if it's not a fault with the card but some software fault.

Anyone else with a radeon card (Specifically radeion 9800 pro) getting this problem in ac after playing another game?

Thanks for any info.

:edit: please could you post also if you have one of these cards, and are able to play ac and other games without this happening to you?

When you set your gamma in the device panel it sets your SYSTEM level of gamma, which most games will use by default. Some games, however, adjust the system level while you play them (adjust it to what you have it set in game) and then reset it back to the default of the card when they are done. The problem here is that the default of the card may not be what your system is currently set at (definitely not in your case). To make matters worse, AC does not have any in-game gamma settings (brightness is not entirely the same).

You don't have a bad card and returning it will do little to help your situation, unfortunately. Sounds to me like Far Cry is not a system friendly app and is not setting your gamma back to what it was when you launched the game.

Thanks for the reply/info :)

It appears that basically anything else I play does this unfortunately, I guess it's just bad luck that the only game I seem to have without gamma adjust is AC.

You might be able to go back into your control panel settings (or right-click properties on your desktop) to re-adjust the gamma again prior to going into AC. I'm not sure if AC would recognize the new settings in that case or not. You may even be able to do it with AC running. Just ALT-TAB out and try it.

I have a Radeon 9800 XT Pro, and had a similar issue in the past with other games. I ended up reinstalling my Catalyst drivers (v4.5) and DX 9.0, then making gamma adjustments within the games themselves, as opposed to the settings in the Windows driver.

Not sure if it's right or not, but I was told that the gamma setting of your Windows display driver is not necessarily what is invoked when you run the game, so don't expect the same results.

Just my 2p.

--edit for just seeing the lack of gamma correction within AC. I know there's a brightness setting within AC on the graphics panel, if that's not getting it done, do you really need the color ratio adjust of gamma correction as well?

The latest catalyst drivers cleaned up a LOT for me
but I still have to turn Z-buffering off.... on the 256
MB 9200 ATI

Another solution is to get a 3rd party utility that can adjust it for you automatically.
I have an ATI 8500DV and use the Rage3d Tweak program from http://www.rage3d.com/?node=r3dtweak and have setup specific gamma settings for all my games.

Thanks for the replies :)

Heartview - I can just reapply the settings before loading AC, but it's irritating that I have to remember to do that each time.

shidenkai - With the brightness setting in ac maxed it's still far too dark, that appears to only adjust the lighting in the 3d window of AC, my problem is with the gamma of the whole screen.

cstanleytech - thanks for that suggestion, I'll see if I can get that to work.

So specifically, other people have this same issue with AC vs newer games with their own gamma control?

Radeon 8500/9100 user here and I'm NOT able to use full screen anti-aliasing.

I get graphic glitches if i turn it on (The screen acts very funny indoors overlapping objects and most areas are black).

EDIT: truform is disabled when fsaa is on and still same problems

I also tend to use the @day command, which makes a HUGE difference outside.

I think that might be caused by Truform as when it I had it enabled it caused havoc with AC so you might want to try disabling it when you enable anti-aliasing.
