Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
Well, it is night right now, but it seems like the issue is fixed for me as well! I only noticed it after reformatting and only played a few hours before patch, during which time it was daytime in game, so I'll see when it becomes day, but it seems to be fixed.
And, I can confirm the fix for the chat issue as well:
Failed to enter chat room. Retrying in 5 seconds...
You have left the Society channel.
You have entered the Celestial Hand channel.
You have entered the Allegiance channel.
Awesome job, Severlin
Any chance you can fix the issue with landscape detail textures next? (On high quality video cards, you can't have these on, or the entire ground is black and white, with no roads or detail at all, and turning them off makes the ground look like mush, should be a known/already reported issue.)
Off to explore!

I have an ATI card, and am seeing new sky drawing bugs that weren't there previously. Basically they are sharp edged lines of various colors moving through the sky. This is probably what you were talking about regarding the aurora borealis effect.
I can post screenshots in a couple days... right now I'm too busy exploring :-)

Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
The aurora was having "issues" showing up before which was where the flicker was coming from. The sky you are seeing is with my fix, but the framing wasn't quite right. The fix to the lines you are seeing are done on this end, but I didn't make it for the 10th anniversary. You should see improvement in Dec.
Incidentally, I also fixed a memory leak in the sky code so for people who noticed a memory leak in the client I'd be interested to see if that fix impacted it.

It was many more people than just me, I want to make sure the credit is given where its due.
Without Fyrie, VI, and Lothnar we'd not have had the workarounds, testing, and general insanity that kept this thread going.
Besides sometimes you need to use being a polarizing figure for good.
Sev - you stole my windmill! Thank you for the hard work. It is fantastic to see how quickly this was addressed once the right person got the job. I have faith that by December patch we will see the end of sky problems.
wubbie - anyone want to buy a used lance, suitable for jousting windmills.

Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
I think I'm going to have a heart attack. I just hopped into the game for about 10 minutes without any flickering issues.
Sev, thank you!
I can say that I have spent several weekends worth of free time over the past two years trying to fix this problem via graphics settings, swapping hardware, Wubbie's cooling experiments, etc... I'm glad that the speculation is over and a fix is in. This game needs to live on for a long time, and even though we had a few work arounds, it really ate at me that the average new user with an NVidia rig was going to see that flicker and probably pass judgement on the game.
Thanks Wubbie, VI, Lothnar, and my other "bug brothers and sisters".

This will probably be in for the 10th anniversary.

Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
so i used the clear sky fix when i came out and it worked great. But now being a computer inept, i have no idea how to revert to the original to get the new fix from turbine. Ideas would be appreciated.

Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
There was an area in the Tusker Food Storage dungeon where the floor flickered quite a bit, even on a ATI card.
Does it still do that?
Is it supposed to do that?
BTW -- its in the part of the dungeon with the big huge ramp down. Somewhere in the middle of that ramp, if you look back, a whole section of it swims. (Its pretty amusing looking, actually.)

The clear sky archive contained a replacement client_portal.dat file. When you tried this fix, you should have moved or copied the original client_portal.dat to a safe place, and then moved the clear sky version to where the original was (i.e. the main Asheron's Call directory).
To get rid of the modified data file, just move the original client_portal.dat file back into the main Asheron's Call directory.
If you didn't keep your original client_portal.dat file... Here's a link to one from July: ac-portal-2009-07.zip
(Download rates are kind of slow right now, but it's probably still faster than reinstalling AC and updating from scratch.)
I hope this helps.

This is most likely something called Z-fighting:
"Z-fighting is a phenomenon in 3D rendering that occurs when two or more primitives have similar values in the z-buffer, and is particularly prevalent with coplanar polygons, essentially when two faces occupy the same space with neither in front."

I'm familiar with the location, and it has always done that, even though it shouldn't. There are probably two overlapping down ramps at that position.

Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
Okies some random thoughts... bear with me please I'm working on 23 hours awake at this point.
1 - No ones bugged any more, right? No other oddities to report?
2 - I've had a new "microglitch" developing... I need to try without Decal on and see if its Decal or AC based. I throw this out so someone else can see if its just me. When scavenging the vendors in Candeth up the tree when I id something then buy it I get a microflash of the sky. It might be more than the sky but I see a very fast "blink"... It presents more with the Lugian and the Human than the Toomie.
3 - Lothnar would the Z-fighting explain why sometimes when heading into a mansion the "opening" to the stairs to the basement sometimes flips between the groudn texture and the open texture?
wubbie - tired wubbies need sleep
