Open Preview = Open Beta. Same thing, different word.

That is more of an issue with the latency involved with your ISP then having to do with AC.

Will we see any dev-controlled mayhem in the open batch? Like Shadowclaim?

If not, *cry*

And I bet this will end up CRAPPY for non-Leafcull players.
Unless you guys plan on doing what MSN did and give out XP, this preview stuff will be totally useless.

While Leafcull players will easily reach 126+, the rest of us are stuck trying to level our level 1 toons to 126?

Or are we going to be playing +LeO games for 15,000 experience points?

A plain old "fool around" server like Shadowclaim would've been best - even if it was a test server.

i think you are missing the idea of the preview, it isn't so you can pvp and run around like on shadowclaim. i think it's just to look around a little in the updated world with the new client and such. not to have a new play ground where you have to be lvl 126+ to do something.

I was under the impression that it had something to do with UDP packets. I can plan multiplayer games like CS:S and HL2, not at a blazing speed, but I can play them.

I'm well aware, cable/DSL is not available everywhere.

It could, but not sure if that is still an AC thing or an issue with your ISP dealing with UDP packets.

Most near-real-time games will use primarily UDP-IP instead of TCP-IP. They could even roll their own protocol on top of raw ethernet but that may not be compatible with many QoS policies on the routers/switches in between.

With UDP you are not guaranteed delivery or order on your packets. It's faster than TCP because of this and this is why it is common in games.

If there is significant latency in satellite (which it sounds like there is) then UDP is likely to have many undelivered packets making game play miserable or even impossible.

So perhaps your (Kheras) original question could have been "when will you dump UDP in favor of all TCP?". That answer should be "never".

Unfortunately that's really up to your ISP. I don't personally know of any way for you to get ping times low enough to make the game playable via satellite, but then I'm not a network engineer. (There are actually a LOT of reasons why I'm not a network engineer.)

Before we gather the wood for the pyre and burn him in effigy it is important to know how long he was heading QA. That will let us know how big of a fire to make.

QA Coordinator isn't the same as QA Lead, but that's not the point, right? Honestly? If you want to burn anyone in effigy, burning Darren is the wrong way to go. Burn the rest of us for not agreeing with his time estimates sooner. This is why we made him Producer -- because his schedules and estimates were proven correct.

Hey, if you want to burn someone in effigy, please feel free to burn me. It's why I'm here.
